Lucas vs Amsoil vs Royal Purple

Switching to a synthetic oil

These are suppsed to be the top 3

Just wanted to know what others are using, what the change interval is and what kind of oil filter you use

roddy 06-29-2009 05:59 AM

I use either Royal Purple or Amsoil...Right now its Amsoil in the engine and rear end, with Royal Purple in the (manual) tranny. I've been using K&N oil filters, but I think I will switch back to the Ford filter on my next change.

Whats your change interval for the motor oil?

I still have yet to locate a place to purchase Royal Purple Oil locally
I know Canadian Tire carries Amsoil for $13/liter

I found a place online that carries Royal Purple
6 liters including shipping is $100??? (Around $17/liter)
Before shipping its $11/liter

I use Royal Purple but it is getting harder to find and costly. For my next oil change I am switching to Castrol Syntec 5w20. I bought three 5L jugs at Walmart when it was on sale and it came to 98.00 with tax. As I had 8 liters of Royal Purple left I used that up after my cam swap.

I have also used Royal Purple and Mobil 1 as well as Ford semi synthetic oil from the factory.
I have used a K&N, Fram, NAPA Gold and Ford filters on the car. I am sticking with Ford filters for now as they are easy to get.

Recently my engine was apart to change the cams and the mechanic stated that the engine looked new inside with no wear. He said more and explained things but for me that was good to hear.

I would go with a major brand full synthetic oil not a blend and I would base my choice on price and availability to you.

My car sees a lot of high rpms and the synthetic oils that I have used seem to work good. Not really sure why I choose the ones I did as I know nothing about oil and as long as you change it regulary all should be fine.

My change intervals are twice a year as the car only sees limited k's and is only on the road from May to early November. It would look that I follow the 3 month rule and not the km's rule.
Some people say that you can extend your oil chagne intervals when using synthetic but I do not do that.

Hope that helps and as always peoples opinions will differ.

That is what i use too....Castrol Syntec 5w20.
Been using Castrol stuff since i started in the mustang game in '96 with my 5.0L,and i haven't stopped yet.I too had the cams done on my 2V 4.6L 3 years ago,and it was commented how clean it was inside, and last winter i pulled the cam covers off to swap them out to fit my Bullitt intake, and she still looked llike new.But i like to do my oil changes no more then every 3000 kilometers, and when i use to drag my '03 GT a lot for the first 4 years of ownership,i changed the oil even more frequent then the 3000 kilometers to keep the fresh oil in the pan at all times since i rev'd her pretty high while drag racing.:biggrin:

I still change it every 5000KMs.

I buy Royal purple from a local dealer by the case (12). I was paying $7.99/ltr, then $8.25, and i think the most recent case was $8.49/ltr...maybe more, I'm not sure where I put the bill....The price is definitely on the rise, though.

RP does not sell in a liter it sells in a US Quart (smaller)

AMSOILGUY 06-29-2009 08:52 PM

I run Amsoil in mine, front to back. Drag it, beat on it all the time. Still runs strong and clean. Alot cheaper than those prices you had too. PM me if you have any questions. 10% discount for club members.

AMSOil is were its at...

Been using it along with the NON-oiled air filter!!!

nickm50 06-30-2009 01:00 AM

Mobil1 in everything I own.

mustang_fr500 06-30-2009 02:55 AM

I have had very good luck with castrol syntec. But I am thinking of switching to Mobil 1. Some full synthetic Lucas in with your synthetic oil IMO is top notch.

Grassy 06-30-2009 07:12 AM

Folks,

What about a 33 year old MOPAR that you don't know the history of....what should you use ?? I will be doing all the maintenance rather than the dealer for the stang.

Appreciate the help as always !

Synthetics are not going to harm that car however bear in mind that your Dino Oil will have built up sludge around the seals that synthetic will remove due to the detergents in the oil thus causing you to replace seals at an alarming rate.

Grassy 06-30-2009 09:20 AM

i had wondered about that..so best stay with none synthetics..what brand would you recommend then ?

thanks

In the past I have run Mobil 1 Amsoil and RP. In the new car I have factory syn which will be changed out next spring with 1000 kms on the odo. Lately it seems to get changed every 600-700 kms.

I have been using castrol GTX since buying it last year, and have changed it 3 times, and lately my car has not been liking it, so I see mobil 1 is on sale this week at canadian tire, so I think I will try that instead of the castrol syntec...I have also switched back to Motorcraft oil filters

Ray Spencer 07-03-2009 07:40 AM

I use Quaker State High RPM Synthetic Blend and a Ford Oil Filter. I normally change the oil every 2500 kms. The Mustang gets an oil and filter change roughly 4 times a year and the fuel filter is changed after winter storage.

Castrol Syntec is on sale now at Cdn Tire. It is a full synthetic which the GTX is not. May want to give that a shot. Last part of the year I was running Mobile 1 and noticed a bit of sludge in the pan. Could have been from the engine sitting and being pulled out but there was some in there.

RYSSBAY 07-04-2009 07:05 AM

I went with the Castrol Syntec
6.99/liter
They did not have the Mobil 1 in stock
I also, at 100,000km added a bottle of STP complete to my fill up yesterday
Hopefully get it changed today it the rain and thunder and lightning ends...Its been raining and foggy here for about 2 weeks, no lie, havent even washed'er in 10 days!!!

mustang_fr500 07-05-2009 11:46 PM

Good to hear you bought some synthetic. Your motor will thank you later.

RYSSBAY 07-07-2009 08:39 AM

My engine is a lot quieter and its running slightly cooler as well!

gfong 07-07-2009 08:54 AM

Good to hear.

mustangmetalman 07-07-2009 08:13 PM

I have relied on Amsoil products for many years, and never been disappointed.
Once my 4.6 is broken in, I will run Amisoil in it. I have heard that the Ford/Motorcraft/Autolite engine oil filter is one of the best, does anyone know that to be true? I have always run OEM Mopar oil filters on my Cummins equipped trucks because I heard that there was once filter failure troubles with some of the aftermarket oil filters and Cummins would not warranty if a filter that they did not approve of was used (they have a list of several non mopar filters that are approved) Does any one know if Ford does this as well?
