Where's my oil going?

So last week I checked my oil and was down almost a liter. I topped it up and now after about 700 miles I am down about 1/4 liter. I see no smoke while driving yet had a bit of a surprise this morning. Started my car long enough to back it out of the garage and wash it. No smoke. Then when I started it about 45 minutes later there was a cloud of smoke. This leads me to think valve seals. I am going to do a compression taste later today.

If it's the seals what's the easiest fix? Replace just the seals or is now the time to think about upgrading the heads? I want to try and go as cheap as possible but not cheap out if you know what I mean. Reason being is I already have to replace my tranny and rear end as well as what I just spent on a procharger.

Thanks!

Here are the compression test results.

Front of car

6 - 192........2 - 200
7 - 198........3 - 195
8 - 190........4 - 190

Numbers seem decent.

"what's the easiest fix?" no need to remove the heads to replace the seals ,, the easiest fix ,, remove the plugs ,, buy the air adapter ,, run compressed air to 1 cyl at a time to keep valve seated in place ,, use a spring remover ,, compress the spring pop the retainer change the seal ,, cheap ,, fast ,,easy ,, may as well toss a new set of valve cover gaskets to the cost. .. just sayin!!! either way good luck :) wait on the other hand ,, if your married and looking for an excuess to change the heads ,, don't tell the wife there is an easy fix ,, lol

if it is anything like the stock v6 the oil will be in the intake manifold waiting to be sucked into your engine.this is one of the reasons i built my own manifold.the v6 manifold dips down just after the tb and curls back up at the back and around back to the front.this is done to increase plenum size.then the runners take the air from the top and into the motor.this leaves a low spot for the oil to settle out and sit.when i removed my stock manifold i had to EMPTY IT! it is a truly design.get an oil catch can they are great at seperating the oil and containing it for emptying later,at about every 2500 klms or so.this will be needed for the procharger for sure.upr makes a nice catchcan.hope this helps.

I am looking at a catch can. I am confused though. BMR sayd to hook it into the passenger side line where the one from American Muscle says to use the drivers side line. Which one do I use?

rampant racing 10-11-2010 05:31 PM

i really couldn't tell you on the v8 where to tap in.i have the upr and tapped into the passenger side.

1low03gt 10-11-2010 07:03 PM

You want to tap into the passenger side.I've done a similar set up,and you wouldn't believe the amount of oil the catcgh can catchs, and stops from going into the intake!!:?

So would it not still take oil in the drivers side?

SNAKEBITE 10-12-2010 05:09 PM

It's a conspiracy I tell you. I have never lost any oil luckily I guess

For some reason, they say,and pic te passnger side.
There are a few on the interweb that have spliced both sides together, running into a "catch can".

So I pulled my intake off and sure enough on every closed valve there was a small pool of oil. Picked up a set of felpro seals today. Now just to find a spring compressor.

1low03gt 10-27-2010 08:27 PM

That's not good!!How many K's is on your GT?Shouldn't be seeing that at all.

Whosit 10-28-2010 07:03 AM

90k. From talking to a few people locally it doesn't seem unheard of to need seals around 100k.

1low03gt 10-28-2010 09:11 PM

Crazy, that just blows me away.I mean, look what the oldschool v8's got for k's without issues except for the odd oil leak due to aging gaskets LOL! :?

Whosit 10-29-2010 04:51 AM

Well basically this is the same. A leak from an aging gasket. It's not even a big deal but for the price of the seals and an afternoon I may as well do it.

1low03gt 10-29-2010 10:23 PM

The thing is that this is no basic job for some to tackle.:bleh:
Your just lucky that your very mechanically enclined.

It's common on these cars. If you just start the car, then turn it off such as to move it, then next start up it will smoke. If you let it warm up and take it for a ride, next start up, it's good. I wouldn't stress about it. As far as the catch can, driver's side is where you want it.

Everett 04-21-2011 04:51 AM

From what I have seen boosted motors tend to vaporize a significant amount of oil. The catch can is a great solution. When I swapped my plenum over Christmas the oil inside was disgusting and very apparent that an n/a 2v can benefit from one as well. Has anyone got any ideas on a home built piece. Please inbox me with instructions

GT is driver's side. The passenger side sucks clean air in from the air intake and it circulates through the motor and out the driver's side. The air on the driver's side also has the oil droplets that are sucked up and into the intake manifold where it fouls the intake, the charge motion plates. The seperator will filter this oil out preventing from entering the air intake. Hooking up to the passenger does not accomplish what you're trying to do.

driving the way I do should I worry about this?

Probably not but it wouldn't hurt. If you pull your air intake off and inspect inside of it you will know for sure.

SNAKEBITE 11-10-2011 09:33 AM

^^^my friend you are talking about a guy that has trouble adding air to the tires. I will get a buddy to check it out this spring

Haha that might be a good idea then. I don't think you will really have an issue as from what I gather you aren't into the boost very often.

SNAKEBITE 11-11-2011 12:55 AM

that is the truth 100%. Being completely honest I will say I have been into boost maybe 10 times in 3 summers. I assume that's not to often lol

If that's the case I wouldn't even pull the hose off to look. You should be fine. That is one sound I am going to miss is hitting boost with an Eaton. The Vortech sounds cool at idle though.

SNAKEBITE 11-12-2011 10:37 PM

Our Eatons don't whistle when idling which is a shame. I love the sound personally

ChadStang 11-12-2011 10:42 PM

^ with an open element filter and the hood open they make a little noise but not like a centrifugal unit.
