'96 Cobra - Engine/Power question

I purchased a '96 Cobra this past weekend that seems to decide on it's own whether it is going to put down mucho power or just make a lot of noise and go slow (by Cobra standards).

So far, I have been unable to determine what's different between the times that it makes power vs. when it doesn't.

I am certain to uncover more details as time passes but for now I'm wondering if anyone has encountered anything like this before?

How many KMs does the engine have? Is this happening at 3150-3200 RPM by chance? Feels like the engine falls on its face?

It is a lower HP output throughout the entire RPM band. I am slowly getting used to the cam change-over in the mid 3's but I don't think it's related.

Engine has only 62K kms on it and has been ported + aftermarket cams.

hmm, i was going to suggest what flynnt was thinking...which would be the IRMC could be all gumed up.
most of the 96-98 need to be cleaned id say after 70,000km.

could also be your MAF, they have been known to hold back on cars power if they are dirty.

MAF takes 5 minutes to clean
IRMC's take under six hours if you know what you are doing.

check this link out...SVT PERFORMANCE

good luck

My brother and I took the engine down to the heads in about an hour last night. I'm going to be cleaning them tonight and installing the injectors tomorrow maybe.

^I agree with them, also could it be a plugged catalytic converter? Are the cats stock? Is your MIL light on? Usually for a IMRC problem, it will trip the light.

Make sure you replace the IMRC controller and not just clean the butterflys. Its the controller that usually fails causing the major power loss.

have you ever replaced one of them before????
i was into a ford dealer once to check the price of them, and he said that they were over 500.00 bucks...i think it was more around 8 but my memory is not very good. plus he also said that the store had never had to order one before, so they are not a problamatic thing.

yes only if they are not operational. what i was getting at is that the PVC valve sucks up a crap load of oil, that gets gumed up on the butterflys which will cause poor airflow, and loss of power.

Keep in mind guys, the power is there, just not consistently.

Yes I replaced mine. It was only $114USD. They are very common on these cars. They get weak and sometimes work and sometimes don't.
