The T5... yay on nay?

Hey Gang,

It's yours truly, HAHA.. found you!!!

Anyways, as many know I've roasted a C4 in my stang, and want to go to an overdrive unit as a replacement. Thought of an AOD, but 5 speed manual sure seems easier (my car tunnel is small).

Out of the Available 5 speeds the T5 seems to be the only one sized right to fit my old bucket.

The word on these trannies are they aren't very reliable. Is this true? I can NOT fit the larger tremecs in the car, or i would go to one of them.
Are T5 units sold by assemblers like D&D and Gforce any good? are they worth the xtra money?
Or will a T5Z be enough, (about 325 horse, with the odd 100 shot)

Any thoughts or comments are welcome

thanks in advance

Hanes

I put a T-5 in my 65 Fastback. I am running a 351W not sure about the HP. It's got good power. I have yet to have any probs with the T-5. I would suggest a high performance clutch.

Like a king cobra clutch?

You running cable clutch? I am thinking of going with a hydraulic throwout type.

What did you do for cross member?

Thanks

If you don't powershift or run on the track on slicks the T5 will be just fine. The later World Class T5's are quite durable as long as they aren't subjected to very high HP launches on slicks and powershifts. Course some guys can break anything..all depends on how hard you are on equipment.

t-5

The t-5 will work fine if you drive it right . we have a customer that runs 10:30 @ 133mph with a t-5 and a cobra clutch.

drive right=baby it....

They DO not last.... although my FMS clutch has seen NUMEROUS 5500 RPM clutch drops on slicks, the trannies can't quite say the same thing :bang

T5 gets a BIG NAY.... if you DO get a T5, go with a 91+ T5...

Thanks 5oh....

Which FMS clutch and pressure plate you running?

Pretty easy install in an older Stang..............for the clutch I would go with hyd release bearing and a master cylinder hooked up to use your stock pedal. Takes more than a little messing about to mount the master but well worth the effort and looks stock when done. Be sure to properly plate the firewall where the master is to mount as the stock sheet metal is not strong enough.
Last one I did stood up mint for years.

Rick
