89 Lx 5.0 over reving while not under load?

Have big nick clean and service your IAC.. 99% sure thats what it is...

I had a similar problem with the 86 forever, and it actually cost me my idle pass on an etest. I finally tracked it down to the old salt and pepper shakers....

^No offence, but this is NOT the way to check for a head gasket leak, you spray a combustible fluid around the INTAKE gasket to check for vacuum leaks.
Regarding you idle problem, could it be a sticky throttle/trans kickdown cable? When it's doing it, try manually closing the throttle, or you could disconnect the cables from the throttle body and see if it clears up. It could also be a partially siezed throttle plate (not very likely). If this is not the problem, and you've already replaced the t.p. and iac, it sounds like it's gonna have to be looked at by a reputable shop, if you're close to Nick, go there.

INDEED those damn Salt and Pepper shakers are known to cause a plethora of issues like this.
