Axle bearing removal
 

Hey all, I am getting ready to swap the 8.8 into my SVO..

I have my 3.73 Turbo Coupe 8.8 down to a basic housing now.. just the trac-loc diff assy and gears left in it, and I want to get new outer axle bearings. I got the old seals out [was a pain] but how do you remove the old beairngs out of the axles tubes? Is there a special tool? Or a way to improvise w/o a special tool? :tup This is a first time thing for me so.. [so far so good - i'm not confused, yet LOL].

Someone also recommended to buy a rebuild kit for the trac loc and to install extra steels [I think it was] so that instead of it being clutch clutch steel clutch clutch, its clutch steel clutch steel etc.. and to basically shim it in such a manner that the side and spider gears fit snugly. This is supposed to be very good [read: cheap] for elminating the 1 wheel wonder that these things are famous for... Anyone do this? BUT.. I'm guessing the rear is in excellent shape that way as it was in an automatic 150 HP 4 cyl car too though... :rolleyes:

They are removed with a slide hammer and special end that hooks behind the bearing................that and lots of elbow grease of course. They can be a royal pain to get out even with the proper tools.
Some butchers use a torch and cut em out.

I was debating trying to use a tiny pulley puller I have and putting something across tha axle opening and hooking the hooks behind the bearing and tightening away and seeing if it pulls it out.

On the flipside though, the Turbo Coupe axles... the part that rides on that bearing looks nice, not even so muc as a lip that would snag my fingernail, smooth, no dark blue discoloring, and no pitting, and the bearings themselves look/feel ok.. I may just put new seals and be done with it. :)

If you go to Canadian Tire I am sure you can get the proper slide hammer on their loan a tool program it will make life easier. as for the seals next time taken the end of the axle and pry them out!

CT has the slide hammer tool you need. It's expensive, so the deposit is pretty big, but you get it back.

Fought with the right one for an hour, but the left one came out easy.
