Cats and Emissions Testing
 

Hello everyone,

I am new here. I've been browsing the forum and there is a wealth of knowledge here of which I am busy reading!

I have read in a few spots, thoughts on passing emissions testing without Cats.

I am the original owner of a 93 5.0 5 spd, stock save for a K&N air filter cone, timing bumped to...if I recall correctly, 13 deg and the cats punched out of the stock H-pipe.

The car has 70K Km and has been generally sleeping on stands since 2000 with a few start-ups and the occasional boot around the block every year. The car is mint and runs like a dream.

I am thinking of putting it back on the road in 2008 and would like to definatively query all of you whether the car, as is, will pass an emissions test? If not, outside of acquiring a new H-pipe, what could I do to get it to pass?

I bought my 1990 coupe and the cats were hollowed out and it failed all tests real bad. Changed h pipe with cats and past with flying colours you don't want to get pulled over without cats i've had my car for a 1 1/2 years and been pulled over 5 times and every time they are laying under the car i ask them what there doing but never answer lol . I can't remember what the fine is but its high.

My 2000 GT passes easily, but I have a problem passing my 1990 Morgan +8.....very similar set up to the early 90's 5.0 Stang....it's a fuel-injected 3.9l V8 with a MAF....and it has cats......and when the timing is set up for proper running....she won't pass an etest ever......they just didn't set this car up from the factory to pass emissions...cats or not......and the farkin Gov't (who let this car into the country in 1990) won't make it exempt regardless of it's rarity

what I've done over the years is run methal hydrate in the tank and bump the timing back a ton...to like 4 degrees.......runs like shiat....but passes the etest flawlessly....and I've passed without the MH by just bumping the timing back

not sure if you're gonna have success with this method without cats though......IMO....slap on a proper catted pipe....if she doesn't pass then get a conditional.....and you'd never get a conditional without cats

Heres my 2 cents, of witch I had expieranced.....
First of all buy a new H-Pipe with cats (Perferably BRAND NEW!) But keep your old one.
Once you do the E-test take your new H-pipe off and put your old one back on since it will sound better ;)
Keep your new one in a nice DRY spot and keep it ready for your next E-test and/or if you get pulled over by the Police... Generally they will give you 72 hrs to put new cats on. Then you pull your new one out bolt it on and get your ticket ripped up, and on goes your old one again LOL.
Chances of passing with no cats are RARE!

Second.....Drop your timing from 13*Adv. down to 4*Adv. you car will run like a bag, but it only has to stay like that for a short period of time.
More Timing = HOTTER it runs, witch will have a harder time pass.
This is a true fact and works.

So new Cats, and 4*Adv. Timing should pass the E-test with no problems :)

Welcome to the club.

Why are your cats punched out? you gain maybe 3hp with cats gone and then have all these problems. IMO you should get a nice catted H or X and be done with it, get a 2 1/2" pipe and you'll likely GAIN power and have a similar sound.rockon:

I use to do it to....Makes it sound so much better if you punch them and and if you have no money at the time.

It's your call if you'd rather have all the risk and hassle to sound better for free, but not worth it at all IMO.

BTW, 4deg. of timing will not affect running, but you may notice a slight loss in power.

My Morgan at 4deg. idles like a complete pig

^^Edit: A 93 Mustang 5.0 should not have a noticeable running problem at 4 deg. timing advance, it will idle lower and have slightly less power.:wink:
