Computer tuners

Found a site selling computer tuners for mustangs. Bama custom tuning is the site. They claim with engine mods, you also need retune your computer. Is this legit or BS as I have a car with mods. Can anyone say for sure I need this tuner. thanxs

What mods do you have on your Mustang? A cold air intake for a '94 5.0, for example, does not REQUIRE a tune, but it's performance gains will not be seen without one. In order to get the most bang for your buck you're better off with a tune.

Bama Custom Tuning is a well known tuner. American Muscle uses them exclusivly with all tuners sold from the site.

Just my 2 cents.

It depends on what mods you have on your mustang. Some cold air induction kits for example do not require a tuner while others do. I have a MAC cold air induction kit, it required at tuner....Brenspeed SCT to be exact. The tuner remaps the fuel air flow mixture as the original factory tune is meant for factory oem parts.

The Spanish Oak PCM ('05+ mustangs) is particularly fussy about hardware changes. Bamachips (Doug Studdard) ran into personal issues awhile back, got overwhelmed (a product of too much success), and had to rejig his business. He's running it now as Bama Custom Tuning in partnership with American Muscle. The benefit is that the front end of the business has more ability to handle the workflow. The downside is that now there doesn't seem to be a guarantee that Doug will personally be working on your tune. For the most part though, the base tune files for each setup are probably minor variants from ones that Doug originally created himself.

In my opinion,i don't think anyone still running a 5.0L will see much of a difference running a tuned chip.Reason i say that is beacuse you can still control pretty much everything manually yourself to how a 5.0L runs, and performs.
Now the modular era on the other hand, yes a tunner,or tuned chip will for sure help to maximize the fuel, and air mixture, and timing accross the board as everything is done via the PCM,plus with a few other tricks once blowers, turbo's,and cams are involved.
For a 5.0L,an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, and timing light is basically all you need, and if a carburator is involved for some,a vacuum gauge, and flat head screwdriver is also helpful.

Currently the car I have is a 94 5.0 with pulleys, gears, cold air, exaust, and next mod will be heads and cam, all the work has been and will be done at Desilva Racing in Pickering. Should I inquire with them about the computer or should I be going ahead and buying a tuner myself..thanks

Have your car tuned on the dyno with a/f...its the only way to get a proper tune. You would not find much of increase on a mail order tune with that year of car and mods. When you do your planned mods a tune would give you more power and drivability.

As Nick said, tune the car on a dyno.

Be careful though, every shop claims they tune now :)

Also make sure that if its a standalone the tune / fsm is left unlocked. Some shops will lock it.

You don't need to tune a 5.0 until you have done some serious work, ie heads/cams etc

Anything else is a waste of money
