GT40 swap

Hey all, just got signed up here, cool site. I'm finally back in the mustang world again after almost 11 years, and have picked up an '89 LX hatch which i will be tearing down and redoing. I want to ultimately go with a GT40 intake/head combo from an explorer, but am wondering if anyone knows about any special mods as far as exhaust or otherwise that I will have to do if I go this route. Thanks.

If the car is all stock now, you may want to consider upgrading the headers and pipes/mufflers. More air flow in, works better with more air flow out.

Thanks Ed. My intent is exactly that - a better flowing exhaust, and a Trick Flow stage 1 cam...that's why i was asking about the gt40 stuff...i figured it would be a fairly economical and powerful package. Right now the car is bone stock, is a 5 speed and runs 3.08's, which i will also soon swap out for some 3.73's. Any opinions/preferences on exhaust or cams?

Lots of different stuff out there for exhaust, I always liked the Walker Dynomax mufflers and pipes. Exhaust is like choosing wheels really, everyone will have their own preference.

Pick a camshaft that will pass an e-test, if that is a concern in the area that you live. You don't need a lot of cam with stock heads and mild intake / exhaust.

Thanks for the advice. From what I understand, the E303 and the Stage 1 are very similar, but the Stage 1 idles a bit smoother and pulls a bit harder in the midrange rpm's. As for the exhaust, i'll just keep my ears open for now. Thanks again.

Ok, so after scrounging every auto wrecker known in ontario, i finally found some gt40 goodies, more exactly, I can score a whole explorer motor ('96 5.0L) for $600. Can anyone tell me what the diff between these and the mustang engine is (if any) like: will my T-5 bolt right up? Are the pistons cast or forged? What size MAF was on these? Or should i just buy it, swap over the heads and intake, throw my cam in and be done with it? Opinions...thoughts...experiences? Thanks.

Keep the 89 block.I've been beating mine for awhile now and it seems to love it.I stuffed an f-cam heads and a blower on it.

my goal is to make about 350 hp. how do you like the F cam. i haven't heard one before - how does it sound? is it a bit lumpy or is it fairly smooth, and how does it pull in the mid and higher rpm? What i'm intending to put together here is mainly a street ride, that will see the strip a few times a season. I'd sacrifice smooth idling and mileage to get some good performance gains, as well as something that will make me smile each time i fire it up, lol...
