Modular Mustang Racing of Camarillo, CA has long been at the forefront of pushing the factory Ford engines to the limit. The company’s 2010 Mustang 10.5 Outlaw race car, powered by a twin-turbocharged version of the Shelby GT500′s 5.4-liter V8, could do quarter mile passes below seven seconds at well over 200 mph. Recently, though, MMR swapped out that engine for a Coyote 5.0L unit, and despite having a lower displacement, the new powerplant isn’t short on horsepower. MMR owner Mark Luton (who also happens to drive the car) tell us that the engine makes an incredible 2,138 horsepower. That makes this engine the most powerful Coyote V8 in the world.

So how does one go about building a 2,000+ horsepower V8? MMR starts with the stock aluminum block and stuffs it with forged Manley M2500 pistons and billet connecting rods, a Cryo-treated and race-prepped Boss 302 crankshaft and custom turbo camshafts. MMR also adds a set of Stage 3R ported Boss 302 heads and their own Roadrunner intake manifold paired with an Accufab 105mm throttle body, all fed by a pair of massive Garrett 80mm GT4508X turbochargers.

The combination has proven to be just as fast as the previous setup, the Luton recently piloting the car to a 7.02 second pass at 202.55 mph at the NMCA West Finals last month.
