Starting Trouble
Hi Guys, I have an 86 GT which is giving me some starting issues at times. Once in a while when the car is hot, it will not start. When I turn the key its like the battery is dead. Once I give it 5 to 10 minutes to cool down, it will fire up right away. The solenoid has been changed and I don't think its a battery issue. Any thoughts or similar occurrances?
Thanks. |
Sounds like a starter or bad connection.

is your heat shield still over your starter? l had that problem after mine fell off and once l replaced it problem gone.

^? Never seen a heat sheild on one......

Actually it should be attached to the underside of the exhaust manifold and its purpose is to direct heat away from the starter.

Thanks guys, I'll check if there's a heat shield, otherwise I think I'm going to have to replace or rebuild the starter.

Ponyryd, do you think heat has anything to do with it? However, I don't know why it would be a problem now. I'm sure the heat is no different then when the car was newer. I'm wondering if the wiring to the starter needs to be replaced.

a Friend of mine with an 85 has the same problem. He got a starter wrap and it fixed it.
