Why does my car sit so low?
 

Hi guys, I am starting to feel more comfy here on these boards, so lucky you guys you get to read my silly questions and here's my first of many I'm sure:

My 1987 GT sits really low, which I know some people want & pay good money to have it do, but I don't think that is the case for my pony. I think something needs updating on my car. Would it be most likely shock/struts or the springs that are allowing my car to sit so low? I have an H-Pipe with the cats and the cats are about 2-3 inches from the ground when sitting in a parking lot or in a paved driveway. When I look at other cars around town I don't see them sitting the same way, so I think something is odd with mine.

The second part to this question is, if it is shocks, struts, or springs can anyone suggest some good ones. My main goal is to have a really nice & slick daily car that is still fairly powerful but still be able to handle good at the track and give good #'s. The way I look at it is even if I am able to get to the track once a week, which I'm not ever able to do and I haven't been in years :cry2: :cry2: :cry2: :cry2: :banghead: , it would be like this:

1 day at the track, really only afternoon or maybe a Saturday
6 days not at the track, normal daily driver

So my thinking is that it makes sense to gear my car more for the street since it'll be there 6/7 days a week. Just how I rationalise it anyway.

So any help any one can offer would be greatly appreciated.

front and back it sits very low ??

Mine (also an 87) sat REALLY low when I bought it, discovered it had a set of Eibach springs in it. I put Lakewood Traction/Action lift bars on the back and it lowered it MORE, so I put stock 90LX springs in the back and left the eibach's in the front and now it sits level, but its still a lot lower than most "stock" 5.0L's but it does hook :tup

Anways, check to see if it perhaps has lowering springs in it? That'd be my guess, though for some strange reason, some of the GT's just sit really low, seen a couple with stock suspension that were just extra low for some reason......funny cars :)

would having 4cyl springs be making it sit low ? This is another thing to look at,,,,

as far as i can tell,
 

it sits low over all, there isn't really a drive way or speed bump i can't go over that doesn't bottom out my car. and after buying a new H-pipe with the cats, $$$$$$, i don't want to wreck it by bottoming out all the time.

Eibach springs and a set of KYB shocks and struts.. the KYB's are not the best but are a good bang for your buck.. The car should only sit 1.5 inches lower than stock with that setup...

Also you can check the spring isolators,, the little rubber bushings that go between the spring and the control arms.. the car might have lowering springs and not have these isolators,, I have heard of people taking them out to give the car a even lower look with lowering springs..
How does your car ride?? Quite Rough ? If so the rubber isolators might be gone or cracked/smushed down so much that they are not doing anything.. another thing to think about...

Get some stock replacement springs, some 90/10 struts, 50/50 shocks, remove the front sway bar gut the hell out of it.

Mine actually sits up pretty high beacuse of how gutted I have it...and slightly slanted without the the roll bar but it ain't no thang but a chinken wiang
