'66 mustang with 140 mph speedometer

We have a '66 mustang coupe with a 140 mph speedometer. We have all the paper work from '66-'90. Originally had a 289 but in '84 the engine was swapped out for a '72 302. The odometer reading 58922.4 miles. The paper work seems to support this. At current time our pics are on FB under Terence Dinham if anyone is interested. We would love to post pics here but don't have a computer as of yet. Hope to hear if speedo was common on these cars. Oh body style is 65a.

Hey Welcome, and not sure how common that speedo is, but would love to see pics. Do you still have the 289, and do you know why it was swapped for a '72 302?

No the 289 threw a con rod in 84 and the mechanic thought the 302 was a 289 but upon restoration discovered it was a '72 302. The reciept says 289. We have a complete history of the car from Dearborne to Nanaimo B.C. This car otherwise is completely stock. Also have side scoupes and all is in great shape. My friend re and re the balloon assembly, floor boards and rear fenders. Pics are on Facebook as I am unable to post pics here at this time. I welcome all to see!

How is the general shape of the car and mech wise how is it?

quadkeeper 01-17-2012 09:52 AM

We bought the car running but rough was the engine...number 5 intake valve was bent but we are repairing now. General shape very good for 45 yrs old! Ground up resto should be a breeze! Many ppl have looked at her and all are excited! Front left frame rail needs work and also battery box...otherwise this car is original with no accidents. Please feel free to visit my facebook page and judge for yourself...we will be the 3rd owner and paper work is complete which is awesome as it shows the entire history from manufacure to us. Pics are at facebook under Terence Dinham until we secure computer to import pics here! Love this site more than facebook for sure. Also letting all our friends know about this site.

Yes the 140 speedo is common.

Thanks for the reply kwkenf. We have seen several 66 mustangs but the speedos read 120.

Ok I was just curious about the mileage only being 58922.4 miles. Seems odd that the original 289 would fail with that low of mileage:?

Absolutely true! This car spent most of it's life with the original owner but we put the question to the second owner and he was told that before he purchased the car in 86 that the connecting rod on cylinder 4 failed...our reciept for the 289(302) happened at 30745.6, no other info was available. The engine reciept is all we have. We do believe the 2nd owner as he is a close friend of the family. The first owner actually was an employee of Ford in Ont. I had doubts till we saw several hundred reciepts including fuel and tune ups as well as all regular maintenance, tires, and the floor board, rear quarter panels, and balloon assembly repairs. The last tune up was preformed in Prince George 1990...2000 miles less than current reading.

I bet there are a few cars with bent this and that with a lot less mileage lol
