Distributor oiling?

Hi Everyone,
I have a 65 with a 289. The distributor has a access on the side for lubrication. Not sure what type on oil to use. I thought I heard "3 in 1 oil"?

Thanks
Rick

From what I have seen, the 1965 distributor hole should have been capped, as the oil was not used on the 1965 Mustang 289's. I think it was left over design from the 260's.

That may be right or wrong, but I do not put oil in my 289 distributor. The service manual relates to the lubrication of the cam and the felt under the breaker points.

If it's not broke.........

Hope this is helpful:?

Thank you for your help. When I bought the Mustang a little over a year ago, the previous owner mention that he oiled it once a year. But I forgot what type of oil he used.

If you are still running with breaker points and condenser, the cam lobe should be lubricated one a year with petroleum jelly and one drop of regular engine oil is dropped through the breaker plate...??

If you are still using points, you may want to consider moving to the Petronix ignition at a minimum. I am using it and us not that expensive and seems very reliable. Then.. ...no points and cam to lubricate.

bizkid is correct, only the points and cam need servicing
