Rebuild or New Engine?

My 1967 Mustang (200, V6) is "blowing oil" (my mechanic's term) and my mechanic says I need an engine rebuild. His estimate is nearly $4,000. I've done some research and can find some already-rebuilt engines from the U.S. for around $1250... which seems like a better deal.

Has anyone bought rebuilt engines from the U.S. and installed them? Is that a good idea? Are there any gotchas to watch out for? Does anyone know if anyone is south-western Ontario provides rebuilt engines?

Thanks!

I'm no expert but for 4g's could you not buy a new engine? Good luck either way:tup

4'gs too much for a rebuild, you can almost buy a new engine for that. Go for the better deal. You have a link for this place that sells em for 1250?

Way too much to rebuild an old sixer. Tell your mechanic to sharpen the pencil or he gets left behind.

what does he plan of using for 4 grand...jeebus crike...i second the holy hell notion..thats stupidity..shouldnt cost more then 1500-2500 for a freshening up new rings, bearings a quick hone and a valve job...tell him to stick it..thats an insult..this is why i do all my own work..i would have hooked him if he said that to me

Better not sell you a V6, your car has an I6!

Yup. That's way too much money. On the other hand I'd also stay away from a US motor. When you have problems with it you probably won't get real great support. Even worse if you just buy some guy's runner...Then you may find yourself in the same boat but with 2 rebuilds to do instead of one!

I don't know the waterloo area, but if you're willing to get the work done in the GTA talk to Beatty & Woods...They have reasonable prices & know their stuff.

Perfect opportunity for a v8 swap. Should be able to get a decent crate motor for in that range I would assume.
