screwed up horn
 

After visiting three garages and spending several hundreds of dollars my friggin horn still isn't working properly. I'm hoping that one of our cmoc members might have had similar problems and have some idea on how to find the defect. The problem appears to be in or near the steering wheel,(the horns themselves have been replaced, the main wiring harness in the car has been replaced) sometimes whe:banghead:n I'm turning the horn will beep by itself, sometimes I'm going straight it'll beep by itself, when I press the horn ring it will not beep, when I press the button itself it'll only work occasionally when I press it in a certain spot, then i press it again and it doesn't do anything. I mean, how simple is a horn, why can't three mechanics find the problem ? :banghead:

You will need to check the turn signal switch under the steering wheel.

If it is the original you may find you need to replace it. Get the best quality switch, Ford if possible.

My guess is the switch is your problem.

If you change the switch check over the wiring in the steering column also as there could be an issue there.

Tks for the info guys! I don't know dick all about cars but was just wondering, how does the signal light turn signal affect the horn? Think there could be a short in one of the wires or what? This car is turning into a real money pit but what the hell, you can't take it with you! It's a good thing my wife loves the car, it makes spending money on the car a little easier!

I forgot that your car is a 66, that's way before my time but the wiring for both runs through the steering column so it wouldn't be impossible for a chafed wire or something along those lines to cause that issue. Not sure about the switch though.

The turn signal switch is an integral harness and includes the wiring that goes to the box connector outside of the column.

They are a bit of a pain to replace.

When I replaced mine years ago I had the damn thing going beep beep beep when I turned on the signals :)

Even though I used a Ford switch the wire colours had changed on some wires making it tougher to repin.

What if the car had tilt steering, maybe then????

No tilt available on a 66

The problem always is the plastic switch at the end of the harness. The plastic gets brittle, the horn contacts wear, etc
