plasti-dip paint

i have recently found, plasti dip spray paint. if you have never heard of it, you may cry "snake oil", or if you have, feel free to show some pics.

i took the chance at painting my hood scoop on my s197 gt/cs. as i already have some flat black accents, factory or done by previous owner, i kinda wanted to change it up a bit.

so, i brought home my spray bomb, and with a couple cans of liquid courage, i took it off, wax and grease remover was applied, and went to town.

now, some might say, "what if you don't like it?" well, you can peel it off, without affecting the paint underneath. Snake oil? i think not.

i finished painting, and it looked a bit striped, as i have encountered this painting my shelby spoiler, which i had sent in, and done professionally last year. but as it cured, it pulled together, and came out with a foctory looking finish, even , and looked like the scoop was molded flat black plastic.

then, i noticed in my haste, i forgot to wet down my floor, and got a big dust particle in it. after 2 hours of cussing, i began to peel. it came off in almost one peice, and left no residue on the shiney paint underneath.

it's a rubber, that dries kinda hard, smooth, yet stays flexible, and with some work to get it started, will peel off like it was wrapped.

guys are doing whole cars in it, wheels, emblems, interior accents, you name it. check it out on google.

anyways, i have a series of pics i will throw in this thread shortly. just needed to type this out before i forget.

cheers,

jeff

very interesting. I have heard of it but never seen any finished products. What else can be sprayed?

VAEM 09-30-2011 06:10 PM

I've heard of that stuff before. Awesome stuff! I wonder how it holds up long term? But who cares I guess, your just one coat away from perfect!

VAEM 09-30-2011 06:15 PM

Hey, can you throw up a pic of the spray can?

I've seen a few guys use this stuff with good success!! I think it's pretty cool!!

SNAKEBITE 09-30-2011 11:36 PM

I wonder if you could spray the underside of the car

ChadStang 09-30-2011 11:44 PM

Hmmm might be my answer to an affordable paint job on my SVO

BLKnRD09GT 10-01-2011 12:12 AM

Hmmmm, I had some black window frame "panels' repainted at a body shop on an Explorer. The coating or whatever it is, came away from the panel. I took it back and they did it again. It peeled in a couple of places again. It looks a lot like a saran wrap type of coating, even feels like plastic. I could never figure out what it was, but I think I know what they used now.
Just thinking out loud. Have heard of "Plasti-Dip" before, just not in a spray bomb.

TJ_HOOKER 10-01-2011 07:07 AM

i'm wondering how this would hold up on fox body window rubbers. well, we'll see how long it lasts.

apparently what the kids are doin with it, is painting over their emblems, then after it cures, cut out the parts that were too tough to mask.

SNAKEBITE 10-01-2011 10:50 AM

interesting

TJ_HOOKER 10-01-2011 12:35 PM

i will be trying the emblems on my new dodge ram next week, it's supposed to warm back up outside. the temp drop last night has buggered up my curing time i have noticed. if that works, i'll be doing the rims as well. would make a good rim coating, even if just for the winter.

1low03gt 10-01-2011 08:38 PM

I think if you want something to last in this finish, you would have to paint it with actual paint. The plasti dip paint is only temporary.

SNAKEBITE 10-01-2011 11:44 PM

yeah I guess if it peels off it's not all that permanent

Ronnie06GT 10-02-2011 03:42 PM

If this stuff comes in clear, it would be great to spray on leading edge of hood, front bumper, grill, etc before driving to shows. when you get there just peel it off along with all the bugs.

SNAKEBITE 10-02-2011 04:07 PM

Damn that would be just great, good call ^^^^

VAEM 10-02-2011 05:49 PM

Fantastic idea - I guess you could use the black for that (if you don't mind looking funny along the way).

SNAKEBITE 10-03-2011 05:52 PM

^^^I think it would be better than a bra, no-yes

VAEM 10-03-2011 05:58 PM

Actually, when you put it that way SNAKEBITE ... It would look just like a bra.

how did this stuff hold up?

SNAKEBITE 11-17-2011 04:04 PM

that's a great question

Mikey 11-20-2011 01:43 PM

I wonder after it cures, does it start to chip?

SNAKEBITE 11-20-2011 04:25 PM

from my understanding it is easy to peel off

Ronnie06GT 11-20-2011 06:55 PM
