Guess Who's Back?

4 Attachment(s)
ME!!!! I'm back in the Mustang world, as of 3 hours ago. :D:D I just picked up a 2002 GT vert, Black on Tan with a 5 speed and 124,000 kms. It's pretty close to stock, with mild mods such as: Cold air intake, cat back magnaflows, Hurst shifter, Mach I chin spoiler, and a couple other little things. The first things I'm doing to it is changing the gears, probably to 373's, and light bar. Here's a couple pics from my phone. Once I get her all cleaned up I'll post better pics, but I'm glad to be back in a Stang!!!! :chacha:

Looks good.

Thanks everybody, I really like the car, but coming out of a '12 into an '02 I'm thinking gears are gonna be the first of many acceleration mods I will be doing. It's not a dog by any means, but a huge change from what I'm used too.

1low03gt 06-05-2013 09:19 PM

Nice !! Don't fear the gear, 4.10's!!. 4.10's are not bad like most think. LOL
At a 120 or so my GT spins the tach at 2500/2600 rpms. The 5th gear in the tremec 3650 is a true overdrive gear compared to the t 45, and t 5's.

Yeah 150hp will be noticeable especially when you are missing a gear. I'm driving an 06 GT convertible as a demo and it feels a little sluggish compared to my old car.

Soooo, what can you suggest for really noticeable mods, besides the gears and the cai thats already installed? Any suggestions are welcomed. :D

Yeah I hear ya! The one thing I am looking forward to is having a car thats paid for that I can mod the heck out of, and not worry about my warranty being voided. If I break it, I fix it as soon as I can afford it.

If i started over again, i would go blower! As much as i like my GT being cammed, i think a blower would've been better suited for the money.

Having it paid for is the best feeling.

Ok so I have been looking into Blowers and I have always liked the Kenne Bell or Eatons, and I can get a KB 2.1 L (6-14psi) for around $5500 new which is intercolled and comes boost-a-pump, injectors, and chip. They also have the 2.6L (10-28psi and $7000), and 2.8L (15-30psi and $7500). My questions with regards to supercharging my 2valvle, are 1) can my stock engine handle any of these applications without other upgrades, and 2) is this the right choice or are there better options out there? And 3) is it safe to start doing any mods with almost 125,000 kms on the engine, or should it be rebuilt?

Gears and nitrous and call it a day, way cheaper with similar power. The big thing with a supercharger is that unless you plan on keeping the car long term you will never get your money back out of it if you decide to sell. As far as mileage goes I would think it would be fine but if the engine is tired and grenades with some boost it could get really expensive.

1low03gt 06-13-2013 07:12 PM

Yes your 4.6 will handle it, don't be greedy with the boost , and it will last you a long time.

Ya nitrous is another solution, but not with the 2V, the plastic intake has never survived a good life with nitrous use. So now you would have to spend close to 600 bucks or more for an aftermarket intake that is aluminum to take the abuse.

Keep all your stock intake stuff, and if you ever decided to sell the stang, pull the blower off, and reinstall the stock intake, and related hardware, and sell the blower, and stang seperatly. Swapping out the intake on these cars is really simple.
I'm not a power adder guy, and i say it all the time, if i could sart all over, i would've gone blown. No fuss no muss.

DublDee 06-13-2013 10:55 PM

Thanks for the feedback guys, I do appreciate it. As far as getting my money out of it, if I sell it, well I know I won't get every penny out of it if I do it up, but really it's no big deal. Everything I do to this car will be bought cash and paid for up front, so i won't owe anything, and if and when I sell it, I keep every penny I get for it.

Thanks man I appreciate it! It's gonna take a bit of time, depending on finances, but I hope to build her up pretty good over the next year or so.

Good luck with the build.

It looks like I have more problems than just a vibration now.....I took the Stang from Lloyd to Saskatoon this past weekend, and when I parked her in the garage and got out, I could smell oil. I popped the hood and looked from the top and saw nothing, so the next morning I backed the car out, and there was a fairly small spot of oil on the floor. I haven't been able to lift the car and have a decent look, but from where the stain was in comparison of where the car was parked, I'm thinking it may be a rear engine seal. Does anyone know if this is common on these 4.6's, and how difficult it is to replace the seal?

DublDee 06-24-2013 10:18 AM

I'm also thinking if I'm changing the rear seal, it's probably a good time to change the clutch while I'm at it. What do you think?

1low03gt 06-24-2013 07:57 PM

Not an uncommon issue, but don't know how common it is with modular engine.
It's the best time to replace it seeing that you will already be there.

That sucks. If its a rear main the trans has to come out and yes it would be a good time to change the clutch. It could also be a pan gasket so it's worth getting checked out.

Any time someone changes I always suggest to change both the release and pilot bearings at the same time and if its not too expensive the fork. Then everything is new and ready to go. While you are at it an aluminum quadrant and firewall adjuster would be a good idea too.

I know you we're talking about forced induction down the road so it would be a good idea to go with a beefier than stock clutch. Lot's of people use the Ford Racing King Cobra and there is a company called Valeo that makes a very similar clutch. The story I have heard is that Valeo builds clutches for Ford Racing but I can't 100% confirm that.

DublDee 06-25-2013 10:37 AM

^^Thanks for all the info Chad, I will most likely be going with a supercharger of some kind (when I can afford it), so I will likely change everything, including upgrading the clutch. I was going to attempt doing some of the work on this car myself, but this time it will have to go to the shop, as I'm lucky to get 10 minutes off work these days.

No problem. Sometimes it's best to put the time in at work and pay a professional to do your repairs. Trans removal on the floor is a pain especially without the right tools.
