The Ford Mustang has a storied history in the Trans-Am racing series, most famously winning the 1970 with Parnelli Jones behind the wheel of a Boss 302. The Mustang had a good amount of success in the series throughout the late 1980s and 1990s as well, with the Roush Racing team claiming four championships including three straight via driver Tommy Kendall.

Now the Mustang is hoping to repeat history once again as Ford’s pony car will be competing in Trans-Am’s TA2 class for 2013. The Mustang will be playing catch-up, though, as a large field of Camaros have been competing in the class since 2011.

“The addition of the Ford Mustang to the TA2 class is a huge step for the Trans Am Series as we continue to grow and move forward,” said John Clagett, President of the Trans Am Race Company. “We now have Ford versus Chevrolet in both the TA and TA2 classes, and that’s something that the fans have been waiting for, and it’s something we’re finally able to deliver on.”

The purpose-built Mustang race car was developed by Michigan-based Howe Enterprises.

“We’re extremely proud to be able to develop this product for drivers and fans alike,” said Chase Howe of Howe Enterprises. “The Ford Mustang is much more than a car. It’s an icon, and it belongs in racing. With that said, we do expect these cars to be in demand, and a waiting list is going to develop quickly. Anyone planning to race one in the 2013 series should be placing their orders soon.”
