87 5.0 Resto Questions

Good Day All;

I have an 87 5.0L that has been sitting in my garage for the past 5 years, and before then the car only drove once or twice the previous 2 years. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on what I should be looking at to get the car back on the road. I have basic mechanic skills so I can do some of the work my self. I was told that the gas tank may need to be replaced, I believe it sat with half a tank of gas over the years.

Right now what I am thinking I need to do is change the spark plugs, replace fuel filters, oil change(engine, tranny and diff), coolant, new battery, replace all the gas and maybe a new gas tank. Then before attempting to start the car I should prime the engine? I have never primed the engine before so that is something I would google to make sure I have the right idea on how to do it.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

Pull the tank and have it professionally cleaned, you shouldn't have to replace it. Hopefully the lines aren't gummed up, that would be more problematic. You can pull the distributor to use a power drill with an attachment to spin the oil pump to prime the engine.

cheers
Ed
