Check Engine Light-CEL - After Krown

Well I have my first CEL after owning the car for a month.

I brought my car to Krown for a rust treatment and the second time I started my car after the CEL comes on. It is a solid (not flashing CEL)

Krown has no idea what it could be and is more than willing to assist if I find out it was something they did.

My car is a 2014 Mustang GT/CS, No mods whatsoever.
I bought it with 11,000 km on it from a Ford Dealer and I am the first registered owner.

I talked to Ford Dealer in my area (Oshawa Ontario) and they are telling me they will want 129.00 + tax just to check the code, if it is determined that it is due to oil spray.

My questions are:
1) Has anyone ever heard of this? I initially thought it was the Easy Fill as the rubber was covered in oil. Maybe not sealing properly. It may still be that, but have not driven enough since I cleaned it up. How many drives would it need to reset if that is what it was?

2) I know in the USA they can drive into Autozone for a free test for the code. Do we have anything like that in Canada?

3) Any way to get CEL code without a diagnostic tool? I know on my old car there was a count the lights process.

4) Any way to reset the CEL to see if it goes away on it's own? Disconnect battery?

5) Any suggestions for a decent, (but cheap) diagnostic tool I an purchase?

Barring that, Ford suggested I drive for a week or so to see if the oil settles/dries and light goes out on it's own. (Not likely)

Not a bad idea though, I may just drive a couple weeks so the oil dries and looks older running around with snow on the ground, then say I never had it oil sprayed, the dealer I bought it from must have.

Krown says they will refund me whatever it is, but that kind of promise may go away fast once the price gets over what he charged.

Thanks for any help,

Newstang

Wow, first the thing with the dealer saying you screwed them with your trade in that didn't have a working odometer, and now this. Guessing maybe you won't be back to that dealership to try and get his resolved, must have been another dealer in the 'Shwa ? I'm trying to figure out how you are the first registered owner on a 2014 with 11,000km on it, unless maybe it was a demonstrator? Good luck bro, tough start to a new car, good idea with the Krown though, that stuff gets into everything, great protection against salt and stuff.

Thanks Apocalypse. The dealer I spoke to was in the shwa area, so I'll give it a week or so for them to forget the conversation as I made the mistake of mentioning the Krown and the CEL happening right after. I guess I'll have to get a diagnostic scanner and get that code first. I don't really drive that much so no idea if it could even just have been the seal from the Easy Fill. So now I have a Solid CEL light and my Tire Pressure Sensor warning keeps going off. Pisses me off as it makes me think something is wrong. Tire sensor is because I put winter tires and rims on. (Another discussion for a different time )

First American car ever. I'm really hoping it is something small.

Anyone ever use OBDll scanners like this:

Thanks again,

Did you get the sensors for the winter tires, and did they get flashed to the computer? I've heard both versions, that the computer picks them up, or on the flip side that the techs have to go around and flash in all four corners, otherwise you get the light. Good luck.

Not that your vehicle shouldn't be under warranty, but there are some Ford dealerships that are more Mustang friendly than others in Durham. Marigold in Whitby holds Mustang show and shines every year. Heritage Ford in Scarborough sells Mustangs new with the suspension already upgraded (lower springs and adjustable panhard bar and camber bolts). Now if you'd like to get your Mustang checked out by a non-dealer DaSilva's in Pickering is where the enthusiasts take their Mustangs. There are other shops around but I know from my personal experience that Da Silva's is fantastic.
DaSilva Racing
You need to turn over a new page and get things buttoned down so you can start to enjoy instead of cringe every time you get in your Mustang. It's supposed to be all smiles and joy and excitement of the good kind. Get these niggling things taken care of and get back on the road with confidence. If you'd like to contact me on PM that's fine as I'm also from Durham and if I can help you out I certainly will. Best of luck moving forward.

Thanks for those replies guys. I bought a cheap scanner from Amazon and the codes it pulled up are:

P0420 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1
P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 2

Also had a pending P0430. (No idea what pending means)

So I looked it up and I have no idea if the Krown oil could have gotten in somewhere. The CEL happened as the crown was burning off the exhaust as they got it everywhere. Had that bad smell for a couple of trips. Is Krown supposed to go all over the place? I mean under my hood it was all over plastic parts. Ran out of my trunk onto plastic. It's pretty messy stuff.

So, I cleared the codes and we'll see if it comes back. I'm sure the exhaust has not had any mods done to it.

So the light for the tire pressure sensors is gone now, seems to go away after a few resets. And no CEL right now, so all is well. I hope it lasts. Oh, the dealer is pushing again about that odometer on the trade in. I'm trying to ignore him for now. . If we go to small claims so be it.

Thanks again, any input about those codes and what could set them off in a 2014 with 12,000 km would be appreciated.

Marigold will likely be my choice for where to go. I have heard of Desilva and hope I can get some mods done, I just hate dropping off the car, getting a ride and no car for days. We'll see.

The tires and rims I bought were supposed to have the sensors in them as well. When Ford put them on my car, where I bought the car, they were not able to detect them or read them but were not sure if the computer was confused as my original tires were in the trunk and back seat at the time. I've seen the tool I can get to flash each one. Might do that if this happens every time I go back and forth from Summer to Winter.

Thanks Apocalypse.
