Border Duties and Taxes/Cross Border Shipping of Aftermarket parts!

Hey guys! SO being a canadian and always ordering off good sites like americanmuscle.com, you get tired of spending hundreds of dollars on shipping! Do you guys suck it up and pay!? Or do you guys do other things to get it across cheaper, know how to prevent duties and taxes, or do some good ways to get them across the border (legally :tup)! How do we canadians suffer buying american parts lol.

DublDee 11-22-2012 07:47 AM

For me the shipping with companies such as American Muscle is so minimal that it doesn't even cross my mind. I live on the Sask/Alberta border, and getting parts shipped from AM in Penn is dirt cheap in my opinion.

xGHOSTx 11-22-2012 01:04 PM

Yea I could see how being where your located it would probably be pretty cheap. I live in Vancouver bc, so its like 150 to 300 minimum to ship to me! And that's small stuff, when its exhaust and stuff like that it could be 400 or more lol.

GregsGT 11-22-2012 06:53 PM

I'm looking at over $200 to ship 4 wheels from american muscle. If I could find the bullet wheels in CA I would go that way, maybe I'm just not looking hard enuff.

Same here, doesn't even cross my mind, cause it still works out cheaper from them in the end anyways.
But i will say this, make sure you check locally here in Canada aswell, and compare, cause some stuff might be more seeing that some Canadian performance shops are now trying their best to be equivalent as much as possible to keep business.

My god I feel your pain, I wanted to 18x9, and 18x10 bullitt rims with tires, it was 400 to ship. We are just getting boned! :bleh:

Well I guess it all depends if you guys are near border, closer to there spot in Pennsylvania, then thats probs why It doesnt run through your minds :D. When you get charged hundreds for small things I need to remember to buy lube, from my nearest drugstore for my cornhole :bleh: lol

def67 11-22-2012 08:48 PM

When I ordered my rims through AM I shipped them to the Border shop just across the border. Saved me 300 bucks or so. Still had to pay duty to get them through but its much cheaper that way if you live close like I do.

I'm in Langley & I have larger items shipped to Bellingham. There's a place called Can Amer Freight, ship it to them & just drive across & pick it up. Most US company ship for free with in the US. You still pay tax but shipping or no customs fees.

I live in Langley too, I considered the across the border strategy, thats why I posted this thread, to see what others do to save a penny. The problem is, I heard things for cars, exhaust, tires, rims etc. you gotta pay 12% tax, and I beleive 6% duties into canada (18 percent total), so that pretty much tops shipping to your door from america, when you bring things across if im correct it always seems to equal a little more for me.

The parts are so much cheaper so I think its still costs less. Companies in Canada like Steeda or WMS want $25-$50 to ship here plus taxes. I've never had to pay duty on auto parts. On some items under a couple hundred bucks they let me go with out paying tax. I believe AM ships UPS which has outrageous customs fees that you don't find out about till delivery. I've paid customs fees to UPS on some items that where almost as much as the price as the item.

UPS is correct. I beleive the customs fees and such are in the price, cause nothing appears last minute thats there policy, so thats probably half of why it also is more to ship haha. So when you go across the border you just let them know your grabbing a package, and you come back and usually you get let off without duties/taxes? I looked up duty laws and saw 6%, maybe im reading wrong, or your lucky! :D Unfortunetly most of my orders are around 800+, so I would probably get taxed or something. But it might be worth a try seeing as I wouldn't have to wait 8 days shipping either I could go get it like next day.

def67 11-23-2012 08:12 AM

I think I paid gst and that was it at the border. So in BC u must have to pay your provincial tax as well, and ya that would almost ruin it for me as far as cost savings.

GregsGT 11-23-2012 12:31 PM

I found Steeda but who is WMS?

Yea thats how I feel haha, I wish there was a little bit cheaper way to get it across. Like a local that has rights to get stuff across or something!

Newatthis 02-13-2013 11:45 PM

bought my borla axlebacks from AM. here's the total right to my door in Surrey, BC. Couldn't get this price at all anywhere in canada or had to wait weeks. AM shipped in less than a week, and i knew all the up front costs.

Product Total: $719.99
Sales Tax: $0.00
Shipping Charges: $132.46
Discount: $0.00
Coupon Discount: ($10.00)
Total: $842.45

Ray Spencer 02-16-2013 06:19 PM

I just suck it up. By the time you do all the running around to try and save the 18% you may as well have stayed at home and had UPS deliver the product. What would make more sense is if we could buy these products in Canada rather than having to buy from American outlets on line. Right now I am considering a wider BBK throttle body for $309.00 USD for my 2005 4.0 from American Muscle...wonder though if it would be cheaper to order it through Lordco in West Kelowna, thus saving duties, shipping etc.

VAEM 02-20-2013 07:03 PM

I try to buy from local speedshops when I can. I like to support the hobby and keep the grass roots guys profitable - their the guys that are really going to help me out when I need it. Sometimes though, shops like AM are just too well priced not to order through.

Taxes and SH##

I just ordered the rear bumper lettering for my 99 cobra, which are on sale for 59 buckers and by the time they get to my door I will pay just shy of 100 bucks.
If you know someone that has a post office box in the US close to the border that would be the way to go, at least then your only paying HST and no duty!!!!!!

Like a couple others have suggested, if you live anywhere near the border check to see if there is a retailer on the US side that will accept orders on your behalf & have the items shipped there & bring them back across the border yourself. You'll still have to pay the taxes coming back across, but you'll save the shipping & brokerage fees which can amount to a lot of money.

intl shipping

Ok this shipping stuff is my business and we will start with ups yeah you are going to get stung with brokerage fees and collection of hst/gst but it is not ups fault they are not the ones who decides to pay and how much it is done by a third party company under contract. You already are getting a great price out of the us but the us companies should have there own in house brokers and just charge you there rate.I looked into getting a borla exhaust system and would have saved about 800 clams but shipping was going to be about 150 and everything else would have added another 200 so at the end of the day I would still have saved 450 bucks not bad.One thing everybody if you are ordering on a website go right through it and go to international shipping procedures and 9 times out of 10 it will tell you that you could be responsible for all applicable taxes and duties, brokerage so please don't blame the courier he's just doing his job,and he just might own a stang as well.If you are really patient use usps which connects with canada post and a LOT of time they will not collect any charges at all mininum they will collect hst but no brokerage because it is a pain in the ass document wise for everyone involved. The idea about shipping to a holding location then retrieving it yourself is good as well but for us either with (ahem) record or live to far away it is not viable.good luck:banghead

Does Cmoc not have a Sponsor Code for American Muscle? Granted its only 5% discount on all orders but 5% is 5% right?

def67 03-15-2013 11:46 AM

Cmoc does not but mustang forums.com does if that's what you're referring to.

rk122075 03-15-2013 04:06 PM

ya thats it. :)

Thack 03-27-2013 08:54 PM

I think that if the item is manufactured in the united states, there will be no tariff duties.

Thack 03-27-2013 09:04 PM

Try Steeda.ca

They have free shipping across Canada. You would have to compare prices, however.

I've got a few things from Steeda.ca since they've started the free shipping in Canada. I find the parts more expensive than the US, but there's no surprises on delivery. I don't know why other Canadian companies don't do the same. It would increase there sales.

Ottawa-X 03-30-2013 04:32 PM

I live near the NY border. There is a UPS shop just across the border that holds your packages for $5 per week. You just use their shipping address, track your own package, and when it arrives at the UPS store, go and get it. They are fantastic. Takes me 1.5 hours round trip and voila - save a pile on shipping and brokerage fees each time. They often handle tires and will even handle pallets. I still pay the GST, but you would have to anyway.

Sinister03 03-30-2013 04:56 PM

There is a rumour going around here that a new company is opening soon here in Canada that will be shipping from east to west side of canada that will be close to matching american prices and the convience of getting it shipped right to your door helps. Remember the US has alot more people and alot of products made there so it is hard for canadian companys to compete. Everyone thinks buying from the US is the best route but not always. I used to drive to the boarder and pick up my parts and bring them back, but once you add up the time and travel and hassle its better to pay more and have no worries.

def67 03-30-2013 05:23 PM

My time and travel saves me lots on shipping since I'm only half an hour from the border, but you've peeked my interest in this new company!

Sinister03 03-31-2013 07:48 AM

We also have to remember that we have way less people here in Canada, and canadian performance shops have to import all the products and still try to turn a profit. I prefer to spend my money here on home soil and help keep our economy growing. Yes if you live by the boarder then I guess it makes more sense to get it shipped to a holding cell and bring it over yourself. Its very hard for a canadian buisness to compete with someone like AM cause there like the walmart of mustang parts. Small performance shops here have to order the parts at a %30 discount, then have them shipped to a boarder broker, then shipped to there shop then shipped to there customer. The discount goes all to shipping companies!!!! There the ones who make money...lol
