I am starting my 66 Mustang project and wanted to see if the engine turns over before I start to strip the car apart. Never saw it run when I bought it.

It is a straight 6 200 cu inch. I charged the battery and installed it. Turned the key and all I got was a fast clicking sound from the starter.

I am not keeping the engine but want to at least try and sell it. If it ran I might be able to get a bit more money for it.

Any ideas? Siezed engine? Starter?

Pull the plugs, remember which cyl they came from, good time to check to see how they were burnin, try to turn it over by hand, if it rotates, clean all the elec connections on the starting system. Good luck man.

Yeah that sounds like a connection on the starter.

I jumpered right across to the starter and got nothing. I pulled the starter and connected the battery directly to it and got nothing. So I think the starter is dead. I found a lot of corrosion around the housing too.

 

You said it's 200 6 banger right. Well I'm not sure if it's the same as the one that was in my old 67 merc, but if it is, there is a dust cover on the bell housing of the tranny, and if thats broke off, or out of place, the water, mud, ice and snow can get directly into the starter. Mine was a 240 6 banger, so may be a bit different. Anyway, what I did (and this sounds stupid) was flush the starter about 7-8 times with gasoline, and let it dry out, and the next day she was turning.

Probably not the same problem, but thought I would throw out there just in case it was.

 

I didn't see a cover of any kind. The starter was exposed and easy to remove from the top. I will try that or some electrical cleaning spray and see if it works. Worst case I take it apart and clean it out and try not to screw it up putting it back together.
