I drive a 2000 Mustang covertible up to now it has been a no worry drive BUT my check engine soon light just came on,oil is fine,water is fine ,should I bring it into the shop ?or is this something that I can fix my self,I dont have an owners manual so any info would be very appreciated

I assume the car is still driving fine?

Any recent changes?

Yeah the car is running great,the only difference is the light being on!!

have you changed the exhaust at all?

if you have 300.00 laying around go to crappy tire and get a OBD II code reader.
if you are close by Trenton Ontario, i have one i could scan your car. :tup

Hi and thanks for responding!!No nothing has been done to the exhaust,and I would love to take you up on your offer to do the scan BUT I live in B.C. do you by chance have a manual?I was told that it could just be a reminder type thing to do a tune up?do you think it would be alright to still drive it with the light on?or could I do damage to something?

I don't think it's a reminder light.

But first...disconnect your battery for about 10 minutes...and then hook her back up.

That will turn the light off and reset everything.

If nothing is wrong...the light should stay off....my guess is it will comeback on eventually.

If it comes back on, take the car to a place your trust and they'll run a diagnostic...probably charge you $75 to do so...the diagnostic will spew out a few codes...and you'll have your answer.

The emission systems on these cars have a ton of different sensors...so it's likely that one of the little suckers is malfunctioning. Not much you can do but replace the sensor.

If you continuously drive with the SES light on...you car will be running in a rich condition...so expect to get worse mileage.

Disconnecting the battery on OBD 2 ('96+) cars won't help you, you'll need to take it somewhere and have it scanned, cost ya $30-40. Don't waste your money on buying a scanner, for $300 you could have your car scanned 10 times, not likely you'll need to scan it too often. Did you leave your fuel cap loose?, that will put the light on. Driving with the light on won't hurt anything and likely won't change your fuel mileage, but if it starts flashing, then you're doing damage and should have it looked at ASAP.

are you 100% sure about that statement with the battery? because i think other wise.

and as for buying the scanner, why not? if you have the money. if a buddy ever needs one, charge him a case of beer and tell him you'll scan it for him :tup

disconnecting the battery will not shut the light off, only OBD I will do that, have to get it scanned. Isn't there a way listed in the shop manual to trigger the codes with a flashing Mil light? My winter beater is a 96 general maching sled and it has worked several times. Check the shop manual.
