How much power from a mid-pipe?

On my old 5L GT it made a hugh difference with no loss in low end torque. However, this was a 2 1/4" Ford Motorsport SS H-pipe.

How about the 4.6L engine? Every mid-pipe I can find is 2 1/2 inch and I don't want any low end loss. There is a place in Burlington that sells them for $200 but they want $160 to weld in cats + $160 for 2 cats. I don't want to buy something that doesn't add hp or torque.

Any recommendations?

About all you can go with is a High Flow Catted H. This still might raise your peak TQ to a higher RPM.

Seek out Magnaflow or High flow Cat what is he selling you for 160?

He is basically selling a aluminum x-pipe with no cats for $200. Then if I wanted to buy cats, thats $80 each, then to have the cats welded, its another $80 each to weld. So if I want a x-pipe with cats, its $520.00.

I could buy a Magnaflow which i believe is 304 SS for $600 with 2 high flow cats.

He is basically selling a aluminized x-pipe with no cats for $200. Then if I wanted to buy cats, thats $80 each, then to have the cats welded, its another $80 each to weld. So if I want a x-pipe with cats, its $520.00.

My 02 GTs power & torque peaks rose by about 8.1rwHP and 6 ft-lbs with the addition of an MRT catted H pipe. It also lost very slightly below 3000 (not really noticeable except on the dyno graph...) This was after the Accufab plenum & TB and K&N FIPK.

You got almost 30rwhp with your mods according to your signature. So you gained 8rwhp after the h-pipe. What did you gain from the TB and plenum. Thats my next mod. Either that or the mid pipe. What gave you more rwhp. By the way, where did you get the MRT h-pipe? I prefer a H over a X if I can get one.

In terms of peak #s, the break down roughly like this:

K&N FIPK: 9.3rwHP/6.3ft-lbs peak (over stock)
March UDPs: 4.5rwHP/7.1ft-lbs peak (over K&N peak)
Accufab plenum 7 TB: 5.3rwHP/4.6ft-lbs peak (over March UDP peak)
MRT pipe: 8.1rwHP/6 ft-lbs (over Accufab peak)

Sum total thus far: +27.2rwHP. Note that these are peaks. At some point I'll get the plots and overlay them to see how area under the curve changed overall. I think it's pretty safe to say that none of my mods to date has really affected output below 3000 which is kind of a bummer. The 3.73s I've got coming should make it feel like things are better down below 3K, even if it's not actually putting more power down...

I personally prefer the sound from an H which is why I got but it's really subjective...any V8 sounds great to me.

I got H-pipe directly from Mustang Racing at

http://www.mustangracing.com.

KanukiStang: You got a awsome Stang. What wax do you use on that car. Thats one clean Stang. I was thinking about the H over the X pipe to retain that Mustang sound. On the MRT website, it's $515 US plus shipping, duty, taxes...ouch. I wish someone would sell it in Canada. If you don't have the Timing Adjuster or if you going to get a SCT chip, you will easily get another 10rwhp plus quite a bit of low end torque. The Steeda T/A in addition with Steeda Underdrive pullies have been one of the best mods for me. The 3.73 gears I installed made my car a completely different animal. You'll like those. Thanks for for all the info. If your in the Mississauga area, I'll see you around. :tup

Aren't they all?

Heh, thanks. It's not always that clean. That's like "school picture day" clean. I honestly can't recall the wax I use..I have like 50 bottles in the garage :banghead:

I think that the car had Meguires on it then. It's actually due for some more lovin' soon. As soon as it warms up a tad.

Yeah, that was about what I paid for mine. Even though it's pricey it's a sweet pipe and even with the factory cat-back changes the sound for the better.

On order with Steeda.ca right now is a Steeda catback, an FRPP "handling kit" suspension (5400-A) and a set of FRPP 3.73 gears. The gears will go in last because I'm still researching the issue of a tune and gear correction in the PCM but the SCT Excalibrator is looking like the early fave. I certainly hope to gain a few more ponies with the catback and tune.

This is what I want to hear! I don't think you can go wrong upping rear wheel torque by 14% (3.27 -> 3.72) with one mod. Even if the power stays about the same I'm sure the car will feel quite different.
