Looking for some proof. 4.10 vs 3.73

I know everyone says that if you have a 99+ you MUST GET 4.10's. However, I'm having a hard time finding results as in ACTUAL 1/4 mile slips to compare the differences between the 4.10 and 3.73 gear.

4.10 obviously has the better "SOTP" feel, I understand that, but that's not enough evidence to show that it truly is better.

I want what's best for my application and not for the feel in the seat of my pants :tup

If anyone has input, please chime in.

After driving a mod motor car with 410's and a 5spd I opted for 373's in my own car (2000 GT). SOTP was great with the 410's but it made 1st gear all but useless and the car a drag on the hwy. More than pleased with my choice.

I went with the 3.73's aswell. In 1/4 times i've run the best of 13.7 at 103 mph,i've also spit out 105 mph a few times. That is with stock tires, and my eibach sportlines springs.
Damien2003gt has 4.10's and hit 13.2 at around 100 mph with m/t et streets, and eibach pro kit springs....but with a nice rpm launch though  .
I imagine with a set of slicks and 3.73's,it wouldn't be that much different then 4.10's.
After seeing you run in sparta, you need gears :bleh: .Especially with those cams :tup .
Those vt II's need gears better then stock. If you were closer,i'd let you try my sled out to see for yourself if you like 3.73's  .

I love my 4.10's

I really wanted 373's when i first got my car and it was what I was set on doing and then ZAVKE showed me the light.

I cant wait till he sees this thread lol

How did he show you? Did he take you out in his car?

I'm not looking for an improvement in the seat of my pants, but rather an ACTUAL gain in the 1/4 mile. I have yet to see ANY proof of a 4.10 gear getting better times than a 3.73 in the same or comparable car.

if you want a difference get 4.30's lol

Last year I took a ride in Bobs car (retread) and he had 373's in it, at that time i still thought I wanted 373's but I didnt notice hardly any difference with the 373's (rpm's drop when shifting) then one day in kitchener Vedran took me for a rip in his car with the 410's and I noticed a huge difference and Vedran explained the gear ratios in the 01+ etc and I knew 4.10's are the way to go. He even said If I dont like the 4.10's he will pay for my 373's and install and keep my 4.10's.

But from what Ive been told the 99/00 have a different gear ratio in the T5 and factory gear so with 4.10's you would be reving higher than in an 01+

I'd love it if someone could explain the benefits of the 4.10 vs 3.73 for my car. However, people just say "it's a better gear" without knowing why or if it really is.

Raf, what effect did the 4.10's have on your 1/4 mile?

last year I ran 14.301 with a k&n and flowmaster mufflers with a 2.27 60 foot

this year with 4.10's O/R X pipe and M/T I ran 13.7 with a 2.0 60 foot

Everyone says it takes away .5 seconds

4cyl5.0 07-03-2005 12:34 AM

i dont have a 99+ i have an 88 lx but im also auto and i hit a 1.80 60 ft with 4:10's and M/T et street radial tires. Dont know if that helps u with ur pick thats just my 2 cents.

I saw your post on Corral. Almost a hundred people have viewed it and no real proof. I'm interested in this as well.

gears

I can't help you out with your application, but the difference I found between the 2 gears is quite noticable on my friends 89's. the car with the 4:10's just seems to have more pull throughout all the gears, but at the same time it seems like alot of people are forgetting that your rim and tire size also affect the gears. You cannot really compare a car identicle to yours with 4:10's if he is running 15 inch drag lites and your running lets say 17 inch cobra r's.

also with the 4.10's it seems like your more into the power range (although I cant really say because I only driven a 373 gear car once up and down a street)

with the 4.10's every time you shift you get thrown into the seat, I think with 373's the RPM's would drop too much to get that.

Roadkiller 07-04-2005 07:42 AM

This has turned out to be an excellent question! I am also waiting for the person that can post the required time slips that will "prove" what everyone "thinks". Looks like it may not happen

89LXBlack 07-04-2005 06:10 PM

I've never seen actual results just people say that it feels better. that means dick all at the track

Shaved03gt 07-05-2005 02:38 PM

ok 87-98 t-5 tranny, 99-01 1/2 t-45 tranny 01 1/2 to 04 3650 all completely differnt gears which will effect you rear gear ratio.

I have had every gear from 2:73's all the way up to 4:10's exclude 3:90's.

for a n/a fox 4:10's no brainer here.
nos car or supercharged 3:73's and extend the rev limiter a little.

same as above for the t-45

Now the 3650 that i have in my car i went with 3:73's with my bower and i WISH i would have done 4:10's. On the highway with the gears i have now it is just over 2000rpm at 120km/h.

Not enough gear in my opinion.
An n/a car with a 3650 i would do 4:30's perfect gear for a n/a car but it is more towards the street car track car type.

I personally lost .4ths of a sec with 4:10's in my fox with a sticky tire and lost .3 with the 3:73's.

slicks with any gears over a 3:73 is a wild ride.

anyway hope this helps at all,
later shaved

BIZ 07-06-2005 01:27 PM

I pull 1.7 60 foots all day off idle with 3:55 gears and M/T streets, just thought I would add to the confusion

4:10's will get you down the track faster then 3:73's
you need to know what you want, cause 4:10's are always reving too in the city and using alot more gas, if your turning it into a track car, go with the 4:10's, you will NOT be dissapointed, if your looking for a everyday gear with some kicks, I'd say 3:73's
Steve, I dont have any slips for you, but I'm at the track once a week and over time you can see what ppl run with certain mods...
Hope that helps!

03WhiteGT 07-13-2005 01:09 AM

For a daily driver, 3.73 will be just plenty.
