Some faster then others?

Just checking out a myth. Were some cars faster from the factory than others? I am asking because my 86 coupe is stock besides a drop in K&N and I have beat both of my friends cars, one is an 89 hatch with shorties, o/r h-pipe, flowmaster, 3:73, cold air intake and under drive pullies. The other guy has an 89 hatch with 4:10, long tubes, o/r h-pipe, flowmasters, pullyies, welds, cold air. I can beat them both, my car is stock besides the fact it was built to be an SSP it just never made it that far. Any thoughts would be great.

Sounds like a difference of drivers. I might be wrong but I think your 86 is lighter.

Get'em to the track and put the myth to rest :tup

The Speed Density cars (86-88) seem to be a little quicker than their Mas Air counterparts (89-93) when they are both in the bolt on stages for sure. There are a lot of other things that go into the performance of a car though....their cars came with considerably more power than the 86 with bigger throttle body, larger upper intake runners, and much better flowing E7 heads so they should easily be able to walk over your stone stock 86 especially since they have gears, but at the same time I think they've both got too much exhaist for the mods which is gonna cost them a lot of low end torque.

When you race them what happens? Are you going from a roll or a stop, what kinds of tires? Are all of you 5 speed guys? Do they come back hard up top or is this just light to light action?

I think it's a lot of driver there....the 89's should be killing you.

86 vs. 87-93

Well when it comes to tire I runn the widest they are 265/50 rears and I know what you are saying about the 87 stuff because I have a computer from an 87 in my car I also have the trottle body and upper plenum from one as well just not in stalled. The 89 with the 4:10 was light to light from a dead stop and the 89 with the 3:73 was rolling start and we went well past a 1/4 mile. the one with the 3:73 I got a huge hole shot on him and he just couldn't catch up and the one with the 4:10 was odd it seemed like he had about a 1/2 a car through first then second i caught him and after that I pulled little by little until the end of the street. I'm not saying my car is super fast or anything I am just trying to find out if my friends can't drive or if they have made some major errors on there set ups. Oh yes and we are all 5 speed I have a hurst the other 2 have a pro 5.0

Sounds like lack of skill on your friends behalf. But yes, it is true. Some cars are just factory freaks. I've driven an almost bone stock '88 coupe to a 13.6 with no sway bar, on slicks, bumped timing, removed air silencer and an awesome tune up. The car hauled ass, and its funny because this car sat in the same spot for 5 YEARS!!! Some are just faster than others. I sold my friend a beat to hell '88 hatch and that is to date the fastest bone stock fox Mustang I have ever driven! This car was a heap of junk, rotted all over, one muffler hanging, sheetmetal peeling around the sunroof.... it was JUNK! I raced him in a mild '87 coupe with 3.55's, subframe connectors, shorty headers, cat back exhaust, K+N filter and bumped timing. He pulled me from the line, and kept pulling..... and this wasnt a drivers race as I am a better driver than he is. So yes, some are faster than others. In your case, it could be a case of driver and factory fluke......
