Western Motorpsorts SDS standalone..any users?
 

I'm seriously thinking about buying one of their SDS units for the SVO.

I bought a huge bottom mount intercooler [it's a 57 row core - made of two big stock cores], which basically put me past my stock 35 lb injectors.. had to drop boost down from 23-24 PSI to 21-22 PSI, and run base fuel press. of 54 PSI :bleh: in order to stay upper 11s for A/F on the wideband. So mid 70s for fuel pressure under boost which is insane.. Sooo.. I have some 42 lbers on the way.

Anyways the SDS units look pretty slick.. they have setups that basically plug into your stock harness, and you make a small mod to the distributor, need an MSD [the white wire], add the map [i'd get a 3 bar :biggrin: ] and it's up and running..

I love the idea of speed density, NO MORE vane air meter with this metal door my turbo has to suck open before it can make boost.. :rolleyes:

Anyone on here running and SDS system? The new ones come with wideband capability but you have to use their wideband which would mean i'd have to sell the AEM but that's life..

A guy I know is running it on his '66 Dodge Charger 383, he set it up as EFI and the car runs sweet and is ultra cool! He loves it, and raves about it.
Personally, I did some research before I decided to sell my car and wanted to go with a MegaSquirt system. Do some searching, you will find the MS system ALOT cheaper and there are many more things you can do with it. Granted, it doesnt have the hand held programmer but you can do so much more with it. I've spoken to a few people and one of my friends has installed several at his shop..... everyone has said that with the Mega Squirt system the cars have always started on the first try. Thats pretty damn good if you ask me.

I have three friends that use it and they all love it. Good system and very easy to use.

SS - yeah I have heard good things about the Megasquirt. MUCH CHEAPER for sure.

Thing is, I have some computer skills, can do some html and stuff, and I learn quick, but for some reason it just scares the daylights out of me to get a standalone type setup and have to build it, then do all the programming of it, vs. the SDS... which is just a keypad.... comes with a base startup program based on what you have done, and lastly plugs into the stock harness... I have a decent understanding of the inner workings of the EEC and whatnot, so tweaking on the SDS wouldn't confuse me, just that if I had a Megasquirt, or even just an EEC Tuner for that metter, i'd be lost for a while till I figured things out.

And, the one vendor I am buying it from [Scott Ressler @ S&R Racing in the States] has about 5 customers as well as himself all running them on 2.3Ts, his fill weight Turbo Coupe runs 12.40s.. so the tech support would be awesome.. He said he would put a startup program in for my SVO that would likely require little tuning as far as the closed loop driving around, warm and cold idle kinda stuff.. WOT, i'd have to tune obviously but i'd get their wideband setup with it and sell my AEM wideband.

Well, in that case it definitely sounds like the SDS system is for you. You have to find something that you feel comfortable using, there's no point if you have to bring someone in to tune your car. You want to be able to hit the track and have the ease of mind knowing that you can play with it between runs and you wont make a catastrophic mistake. The SDS is a great system, and if you have the tech support for your specific car then definitely go for it. Best of luck!
