Hello from Montreal!

New member: 2001 V6 Mineral Grey Pony, 100k Km; just did body and paint work for $900. LF: hood protector, seat covers, winter tires and wheels.

What is normal sound for engine? It seems to whine (high pitched sound) a bit - is this normal? I could send someone a sound recording if only I could record it! Wonder if performance chip added by previous owner; bought from Ford dealer who really sells trucks (no body shop on premises).

This is my daily driver, so any advice welcome. Will post pics when ready. Body shop promises wax job one week after paint dries.

I'm trying to record the whine using computer technology. If I fail, I'll surf Youtube or a better place (?) for existing sounds to compare and get back to you.

Another sound it makes when shifting above a certain speed - a cross between a growl and a bark - 'reminds' me of Steve McQueen's car in the movie Bullitt.

I have more questions, but I want to sing praises of Bannon C. Woods Jr. who came out late the evening a few weeks ago to run an OBDC scan and check under the hood; here's his site -

Is this sound coming from the rear?

I just had a pretty major repair with the bearing seized to pinion shaft from rust build-up. The rust was from the previous owner using synthetic oil in the rear end (synthetic oil won't heat up to vent the moisture out). The sound it made was a bark when I accelerated and then let off quickly.

Open the zip file, and use Audacity to open the only file with the extension "aup". It's about 12 minutes long or so, and the whine is more noticeable during the second half, I believe.
