NEWB!! But couldn't be happier

Hey everyone,
Names Chris, I have 10k in my hands right now for a Mustang. So I figure I should check out the local forums, get to know the car better, what to look for and what to avoid, and then buy! Heck maybe someone is even selling something here! Who knows. Anyway I had a Turbo Grand prix last (Was putting 16psi approx 390WHP) and the intake blew on me (factory recall), and it wrote off the car. So now I have a nice 61mm PT-61 turbo, Garret A-A IC, piping and all the fun stuff plus 10K for a new car. I hear everyone runs TT with their stangs but im sure single will put out enough power to make me forget about my GP. Im excited to be a part of the forum and meet everyone. Thanks for all the help in advance! Also is there a large difference with Insurance rates between a GT 8Cyl and the 6cyl? Plus if I am intending on running boost (turbo or perhaps a blower) Is there more supporting mods for the V8 vs V6 or is it pretty even?

-Currently looking at a 2002 Mustang in the Trader-

archer379 12-11-2007 06:15 AM

hey welcome to the site. parts for the v6 are a little harder to find there is a guy on here who was buildinng a v6 turbo. i have a 99 v6 and think that everyone builds a v8 so dare to be different and go the v6 route

Ponyryd 12-11-2007 09:10 AM

Welcome.
Insurance is not much different, parts are WAY easier to find for a 4.6.

Apocolipse 12-11-2007 12:04 PM

How much are you paying for Ins? Im 20 so that needs to be taken into consideration when buying a big V8 stang for ins.

Stang Illusions 5.0L 12-11-2007 12:33 PM

Sounds like you like to go fast....;)
If you wanna go fast and TT a Stang you should look at buying a 87-93 Notch (Trunk not hatch).
I own a 94 GT very nice car but its kinda on the heavy side. Now its losing some weight at the gym lol.
Everyone makes fun of the 94-98 but the 99-04 and 05+ are no feathers by any means, im sure they are probly heavier.
Moral of the story is think about a 87-93 (87 No e-test) light = go faster.

If you deside to go with the Fox, there is a couple spot to look for.
-Pop the hood and at the bottom of the strut tower
-behind the front tire were he strut is, there is a flat plate you can feel it if you stick your hand in there, but you wont see it if the front tires are on.
-underneith the rear seat cusion
-Under the car were the trailing arms attach to the body from the rearend.

Hope this helps and keep us updated on your decision.

For $10,000 you can buy a 96-98 Cobra.

I paid 10k for my 97 2 years ago, put $1500 into it, put down 419rwhp at 8psi supercharged, non-intercooled with an extremely conservative tune.

People have gone 10s on a stock motor twin turbo V6... but only for a few runs.
Engine parts for the V6 are generally more expensive, but it is coming down. Otherwise, most of the parts are more or less the same.

As for insurance, my 94 V6 costs $100/month, my 97 Cobra costs $220/month, a GT would cost me $150/month. I'm 23 so it's cheaper for me than it would be for you. I also live in a town with cheaper insurance ($20/month more if I lived in Windsor).

Welcome to the site Apocolipse

Dont get him to scared on the insurance there flynnt. i pay the same for my 96 cobra as i did my 2003 V6.

All the mustangs have their pros and cons.
Let us know what model you are most interested in and we will give you the info you want.

Apocolipse 12-11-2007 04:20 PM

Hm only 220 for the cobra eh? Thats not as bad as I had thought it would be. I was thinking something from the 95-2004 era... (2 diff body styles I know). On the trader I was looking at a 2000 Black GT for around 9k. However i also like the previous body style and if that means less insurance and more parts available then I would go that route. Im used to dealing with low after market support because thats what I had to deal with when I had my grand prix. The thing was SO fast I was scared of it. I want that feeling back! I still have the turbo setup in my garage but no engine for it to go on haha! So thats another question... Is it only twins that everyone runs? Or can i salvage my Turbo and IC to do a single install on the stang? Its a T-61 turbonetics... Worked amazing on the 3.8L L36 GM engine. Figured it would work similar on the ford 3.8. I'm still shopping around. I guess i need to take the 2000+ and 95+ out for some test drives to see what one I like more. Thanks for all the help thus far! I was worried there werent any stang forums for ontario as all I could find was US sites.

Stang Illusions 5.0L 12-11-2007 07:39 PM

94-98 are the same. The 94-95 had the 5.0L 302 CID, and 95 was the last year for the 5.0L's. 96+ are all 4.6L's.
If you want a 5.0L you will have to get a 87-93 (FOX) or 94-95 (SN95).
These are also things you want to look at.

If you want to sell your Turbo as a KIT for the Grandprix try and sell it here....

Hope this helps your journey.

Welcome. The 05gt weighs approx 3500lbs 300hp/320tq and in Alberta NO E-TESTS so forget the test and move out west. thumb: Now then lets put the Fox myth away were it belongs ie weight. Lets say a 90 Fox notch tips the scales at 3000 lbs. this would mean 1hp pulls 13.3333333333 lbs. Now for the heavy 05+gt, it weighs approx 3500 lbs and for 1hp pulls 11.66666666 lbs. For you Fox guy I rest my case, no offense intended of course.

Apocolipse 12-11-2007 10:10 PM

But I believe he was comparing if you were to run identical motors in the 2 cars then the 500lb less would win ofcourse. But I have a 300LB stereo system so I am hoping that I will have more power that weight wont matter haha

Put the stereo in a beater car....You can call it your work/beater/stereo comp/winter car.
And then when hits the fan pull out the Mustang ;) lol

How did you some up with that theroy? Not saying anything bad I was just wondering.....?
I thought a Fox weighed 27-2800 Lbs, and ive herd the 05+ weigh's more then 3500...?

Apocolipse 12-12-2007 12:28 AM

Also I find that a lot of people are running that pully drivin *supercharger* that looks like half of a turbo. Why do people run these when they cost 2x that of a real turbo setup?

You mean a centrifugal supercharger? Not sure where you're getting the 2x the cost of a turbo... it's about 1/2 or 1/4 the cost. I paid $1500 for mine used.

Stang Illusions 5.0L 12-12-2007 05:16 PM

I am also running a Centrifugal Supercharger, and don't listen to Flynnt he stoll his he's a thief LOL J/K Flynnt. ;)

I paid a bit more then that LOL maybe ALOT more....Yes they are pricey, unless you like Flynnt and steel one hahaha.

I often think I should have went turbo since its FREE and doen't rob HP to create HP.
But you sound more like a man when you say my car gets Blow'N lol
I hope this doesn't stir up lol
I was joking. ;)

Apocolipse 12-12-2007 09:01 PM

Whats the benefit of going with that sc vs a turbo? Other then extremely easy install....

White97 12-12-2007 10:01 PM

Easy install, cost, no messing with the headers, piping, etc. You can still make some big power with the supercharger, but it robs HP because it's belt driven.

The turbo kits I've seen range from 8-10k USD. I believe you can pick up a Vortech kit for around $3000.

A 4 cylinder 90 Lx weighs in at a little over 2800 so I can assume a 8 cylinder would weigh more, not for certain. I am guessing. The 3500 lbs was pulled of the internet like the 90 Lx. Mind you it's the internet.rockon: Just checked again 2827 lbs on the muscular 4 banger (1990) 1989 LX 5.0 = 3385 lbs

Welcome to CMOC!

Natural Blond 01-09-2008 07:23 AM

Pleasure to meet you good luck. I'm a first time owner and am always amazed at the friendliness of the mustang crowd.you'll be in good hands thats for sure.

Apocolipse 01-09-2008 11:13 PM

Yeah this forum seems awesome! I was previously on a Grand Prix forum and I found it hard saying good bye but this has been helpful in making the transition. I ended up getting an Acura TL for a daily driver but I am making a 1980's mustang as my project car. My uncle has one (I believe its a 1985) with the V8, manual tranny, etc.... So i was thinking of taking that off of his hands for cheap, tearing it all apart, engine rebuild, twin turbo (if available), redo the entire interior, suspension, body work etc etc and see how much fun I can have with it. Any comments? Or should I look for a newish-er one? late 80's early 90's era...

Natural Blond 01-10-2008 09:41 AM

Sounds like you itching for another big project. And a big power one at that . I think it all depends on the look you want it seems like the price range covers from early 80,s to early 2000, Thats 4 different looks.I don't think drive train matters for your situation, because it,s all being torn out anyway.question is 302+ or modular engine? Ican't say which style I like best because I love them all. I drove an 85 gt once that was my first taste LOVED IT.

dohp 01-11-2008 12:03 AM

ah, that track isn't to far from sherbrooke, i should head down there on a weekend when i'm at my grandparents..
