hard shifter

i got a 1998 3.8 auto
when i shift from park to drive(or any gear) it is very hard to move but once its in gear there is no proble driving it what would make the shifter this hard???

Wifes vehicle had this problem a few years ago.
I took it to a trans shop for a trans fluid change (it needed it anyway) and had them lubricate the shift mechanism at the same time. This took care of it and it shifted from park to any gear like new.

I have also heard of the shifter cable (links your shifter handle to the actual mechanism on your trans) getting bound up and /or needing to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

try adding some lubricant to it to see if that fixes it...

Try lubricating the assembly before you replace the cable. The cable install takes about an hour and a half but more times its a lubrication issue. As someone said changing the fluid and a new filter is always a good idea

I was a Ford dealer auto trans tech for 10 years.. I replaced many of those cables. Sometimes lubing works, but they usually need replacing. Carefull eventually it will break.
