new to the forum and rear end question
 

Hi all! this is my first post and i would like to say i quickly looked around your site and it looks killer! i have a 1988 8.8 rear end i have pulled out the side axles to swap from 4 bolt to 5 bolt. upon takin of the diff plate i found some small square pieces of metal. about 3/4" square. i think they are from the clutch pack for the limited slip. i am assuming this is a BAD thing. i am here to ask "the mustang gurus" if i am right, and if so how hard is it to change the clutch pack. i've never done any rear end work (no pun intended lol) and i know that there is backlash and clearances involved but that's it. any help would be GREATLY appreciated. oh and i had bought this rear end in brampton ontario and i have never seen it work:( maybe shouldn't have taken his word for it that it was good.

There are little tabs on the clutch and that is what you are seeing. The rearend is something that should be done by someone with experience.

How thick is that 3/4" piece?

welcome, been through Zurich many times, have friends in Crediton, Exeter and Lucan, and live in london. at least it's not a tour to get to a good drag strip either :)

^Yep, a pic would help a lot.
It could be a piece of a gear, piece of a clutch pack, piece of the housing, etc...need to see it.
I'd take it to an experienced builder to be sure it's done right.
To replace clutches is a real PITA. First you need to remove the axles, then you need to pry out the "wafer spring" looks like an "S"-it's really tight, be careful and WEAR EYE PROTECTON, if not a full face mask. The clutches can then be removed.
Honestly, it's been a couple years since I've done them and don't remember much else, but if you are not experienced with rears, take it to a pro.thumb:

hey guys thanks for the welcome and info. after playin around on the net a bit it seems like these ARE the tabs off the clutch plates:( on the plus side i do have an uncle who does trannys and rear ends. thanks again for your help.
