New and need help

I have a 1992 Mustang LX with a 2.3 L 4 cyl Auto Trans. The problem I am having is with the safety switch to get the shifter out of Park. It works sometimes but is very temperamental and sometimes takes much playing around to get it out of park. Once out of park everything works fine. As it stands I am now leaving it in neutral and using the parking brake (and in the cold weather the parking brake seems to freeze but that is another question and I have a guy to look at the brakes :-) ) I have been told that there is a relay switch I can disconnect that will bypass this safety feature however I do not know where it is located.

Please help.

Keith

im not too sure on those cars. ive never had an auto in a stang . lol. the safety switch relay should be part of the brake peadal i believe. when you press down the brakes it will allow you to put the shifter in to drive ,rev ect. check on the brake pedal to see if its near there. another way is to get a chilton book from your local cambodian ( canadian ) tire. they have the books there and you can basically rebuild your entire mustang from the book :tup

I had the same problem with my Mustang... But I don't recommend fixing it the way I did.

are you sure it's an electrical problem or mechanical? My 82 z28 had the same thing, it wouldn't come out of park because the hook that locked it into place was all messed, ended up just replacing the whole shifter to a B&M setup.. idk if a 92 would have something like that. but tear u a new 1 has a good point check it out in a manual.

I have the Haynes manual and I am still stumped. I have figured out a way around it. If I turn the key part way forward it will come out of park and then I just start it in 'N'.

lmao , well its not the way you want to do it but if it works. grab a can of wd40 , spray the ever lovin out of your linkage , maybe its getting jammed up. but its a safety feature on them so that you have to stomp the brakes so that the car can be shifted into a slected gear. there should be a safety switch or micro switch that has a plunger style or a button style safety switch on or near the brake pedal arm up under the dash. but if you can get it out of gear it might just be that its jamin up on the shift linkage. wd40 that biatch.

it kinda tough not being there to take a look and help. but ill keep tryin from my comp. :tup

i thought it was a switch thats attached to the brake pedal itself... near the top...
