Noob question about gears

Hey everyone, my car is a stock 5 speed 1991. Would anyone be able to tell me what gears it has, I am reading all over this forum that I want 3:73 gears. Also that I should buy FORD gears only. Any idea the cost of these gears and how much to have them installed? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Automatic: 3.27
Manual: 2.73 or 3.08 as an option.

3.73 will wake it up nicely. I'd guess that your looking at the better part of 500 bucks for the new gear and labour to install....thats just a guess though. Your best option would be to call a local shop and get them to get a qoute.

i went with Ford racing 4.10's ring and pinion set was about $200 then $80 for bearing and seals then another $400 for the install...................but well worth it rockon:

3:73s would be the popular choice on the 5.0l cars

a few things you should be planning IMO

1) Ford gear set will run about $300 taxes in
2) install should also run around $300, and I'd recommend you get an experienced shop to do the install.....you don't want them whining
3) you need to recallibrate your speedo....I believe with your car you'll need to swap to a different speedo gear.....fairly inexpensive....but don't leave it....your speedo will be way off
4) an aluminum driveshaft might be a good move....some folks get a bad vibration with the heavy stock DS after a gear install.....the Ford alum DS is $300.....install would be nothing if you do it during the gear swap cause the DS is the first thing they pull off the car

so...ear-mark $600 minimum just to get the gears in....an about a grand to do the whole job properly

it's a great mod....wakes the car right up

my 2 cents

Uhhhh.....dont worry about the driveshaft.

If you open your drivers door there will be a TAG in there.
At the bottom right hand corner you will see "AX" = Axle, and under it should be a letter or a number under it.
Once you find that information you can then go onto this web site and all your answers are right in front of you! :)

And yes you will want 3:73's for a 302.

Hope this was helpful ;)

Well thought I would update you guys, I bought a set of FORD 3:73 gears and paid a performance shop to install the gears, after labour install kit with bearings and crush sleeves, and new axle seals the bill was just under $700 but I got the gears for $60 so there was some savings there. Anyways, I am struggling with the local Ford dealership here telling me they can't help me get a new speedometer gear because they need the model number off the gear set installed in the car ( so stupid). I am trying to get this info from a local tranny shop, they tell me all the ford dealership needs is the gear ratio, final drive and my tire size. This car is completely different after the installation of these gears, however, I will miss my 1500 rpm @ 100 Km/h.

Not having a fox body mustang I can only give info I've read in the FRPP catalogue. The dealer may be having trouble as the FRPP catalogue lists the "drive" speedo gear having either 6 or 7 teeth. The "driven" gear you want may need 18 or 21 teeth to match the speedo's drive gear for a 3.73 ratio. Look through the FRPP catalogue online and you'll find the speedometer gear usage chart.
I guess you could remove the driven gear from the trans and if you can see the drive gears teeth, count the teeth on the drive gear while turning the output shaft slowly. Then you'll know the number to match with the driven gear for a 3.73 ratio.
