Question about Rear Axles

I'm planning on upgrading my stock rear Axles with some good aftermarket ones.

The question I have is to do with what kind is recommended, should I get good 28 spline axles or 31 spline axles. If I get the the 31's, I know that I'll have to upgrade the center unit to accept the 31's. Last Year I did a complete rebuild of my stock unit and put 1 1/2 clutch packs in to help with traction.

Is it worth the money to get 31's + posi unit or just get a good set of 28's. I will also be putting in a set of C-clip eliminators too.

Any advice/input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

How much power are you making now, or will you be making in the future? If your going to be staying in the 3-400 RWHP range, I think aftermarket 28's will be fine, if you are going beyond that or you will be drag racing alot with a slick you may want to step up to 31 spline axles.

If cost is not an issue go with the 31's as you will be bullet proof and will not have to worry in the future. I went Moser 28's and all is fine but should have went with the 31's as reasons stated above. :) good luck with your choice.

I do drag race a lot, that's why I am choosing to go with C-Clip eliminators. I run 26" M/T ET streets, with 4:10 gears in the back.

Not sure about HP yet, never been dyno'd as of yet. But the only thing left stock is the Block, crank & pistons. Everything else is aftermarket.

If choosing a rear Posi unit, what kind do you guys run, what would you choose, would you go with a good after market one or rebuild a unit out of a Ford truck that has 31" splines.

Thanks,

What are your 60' times? I would not use a truck posi, they will slip with an ET Street during your burn out leaving you with one wet tire when you launch, maybe not every pass but alot of the time they will. I would go with an Auburn, or for limited street use a spool. I have a Richmond LOC-RITE it works well at the track but its kind of a pain in the arse on the street. Richmond also makes a Powertrax locker that is supposed to have better street manners than the LOC-RITE.

Can't think of 60' times off the top of my head. But I do run high 12's at a 110 MPH in the 1/4.

I still run the car on the street, not often, just nice days only. Will be building a trailer this summer so that I can tow the car up to the track on race days. That way the car can be set up at home and ready to go, ie. timing, tires, fuel press. etc.

Thanks for the input guys, will look into some of those options QWKR-NU. Is your car the Black notch back or the Blue Hatch with silver stripes. Seen you race at Shannonville I believe, and have talked with you before.

My car is the blue hatch, come on over and say hi next time we are at the track. You didnt miss much on Saturday, trouble with the clocks, no track prep, 17 second ricers driving of the end into gravel trap. It was fun LOL. Out of the 35-40 cars that were there 95% were ricers, so I can see why they didnt bother to prep the track.

It was raining here at my place. Just figured the track would have been shut down for the night. RATS........

Well, guess I'll have to make up for it next time.. I've got the White 86 GT with weld wheels. Just put a new Tremec TKO 600 in late last summer, so I would like to give it a good go.

Still not sure what I'm planning on doing with the rear axles..... Have to do some more homework I guess... Thanks for the input.
