Tranny Swap?
 

Currently have an 89 vert fox with a fully rebuilt AOD with a mild shift kit. I have been thinking of pulling out for a 5 speed.. EXACTLY,.......what do I need,...... And WHAT is involved?

Tranny - identify the T5 by the tag attached to the tail housing bolts. You will need to cross ref. the codes with a site like 5speeds.com or just pull one out of stang
Bellhousing
Clutch, fly wheel
cable (buy new)
Peddle Assembly
Boot and trim
Shifter / handle
fork
bearings - might as well go new
X over


Best bet is to go to a scrap yard or purchase a cheap 5L and have everything pulled for you. You should be able to find a tranny for as low as $100 upto ???

Shops are hurting for cash, you could always pay one of them to do it.

Auto is nice though for cruising, why do you want to swap it out?

I really miss the sound of a 5 speed,... but I do like the Auto,.. Iwas gonna have the valve body done so I can`t put in a ratchet type slap shift,.. but everyone says the AOD`s aren`t any good and not worth building. A nice performace tranny is big bucks. I don`t know,.

I think the best way to do a swap like that is to have a donor car. I have a rusted out (seriously rusted) 92 notch that you could get you parts from. I am goig to strip it anyway. Unfortunately the engine and trans are already sold. the the trans and flywheel are the easy part the pedal etc and all the bits are the tough part.

How much will it cost me,...... Also,... what will it cost to make my AOD,... work so I can go through all 4 gears manually,... like one of those slap sticks. What,... A valve body or something I need?

I think it would cost less to convert to a manual than to a manual shifted auto. Slap shifted autos are almost always standard automatics that are electronically controlled. The exception are all out drag race only transmissions. You could convert to a 4r70w transmission which is physically the same as your aod and then use a electornic module to control it. Your car would drive nicer-feel sporter even with a stock 4r70w due to changes in the shift /torque convt lockup sequence between the two transmissions. But this isn't cheap either. You could change over to a t5 manual for about $3500 or so. Assuming that you don't have to rebuild the transmission that you buy used.

3500 sounds very steep,.......I was just talking to a guy who did his swap for 750 in used parts and another 950 in labour. Also I'm more just curious for future ideas,.... Any serious money I spend or have is going toward to resto and repaint.

If you are going to do the resto there would be no labour charge since the whole car is apart anyway...who cares what parts go back on, it takes basicly the same amount of time. The only cost is for the parts.
Yes $3500 may be high but I would rather say 3500 and then when the bill only comes to 2500 I'm a hero... when it goes the other way...I am not allowed to type the words used to describe me on this forum
