s/c noise

What makes a s/c whine and is there a way to make the supercharger on my car louder? Which s/c has the loudest whine and how does the Eaton rate in the loud dept ie middle of the pack etc. Thanks guys:chacha:

VAEM 04-12-2010 08:17 PM

I'm not sure about the Shelby's Eatons but I know the new Vortech superchargers are quieter than the old ones - UNLESS you request an old style supercharger - the major improvement in the new style Vortech is the sound / noise levels (which lots of people like) - hence, they continue to make it available. I know Prochargers are pretty loud. My car sounds like a frekin airplane is taking off.

Kaisoboy 04-13-2010 05:14 PM

Take the hood blankie off. Instant howlllll!!!! Oh and a CAI.

herbz 04-13-2010 06:33 PM

I know on the 03/04 Cobra's there was something you could do to it that involved filling some holes that made the blower scream ridiculously loud. Not sure what it exactly was or whether it works on new cars.

1low03gt 04-13-2010 07:31 PM

Could it be that they may have put cats in them......:P

SNAKEBITE 04-13-2010 09:16 PM

There are bleeder holes to regulate the pressure I think. I seem to remember someone telling me about it when I had my 06 Cobalt SS.SC.

Yeah, they are silencer holes actually.

I think the loudest blowers that I have heard are the Kenne Bell 2.2L for the 03/04 Cobra.

Magnusson Powers makes a blower for the Ford Lightning that is pretty loud as well.

My Ported Blower makes alot of noise, especially hitting 16psi. But my exhaust drowns it out really good.

Kaisoboy 04-17-2010 11:04 PM

Thanks yellowgt. I could not think of the right terminology at the time.

i've always noticed that kenne bell blowers are a lot louder than most. is there any real reason for that?

hmmm a kenne bell GT500.... :rockwoot:

If I get that I will have 2 s/c's=SWEET

rampant racing 05-13-2010 12:05 AM

get a blower pulley with no holes in it.it'l scream.it's the air being forced out from between the belt and the pulley that makes the noise.

I always thought it was the gears inside the supercharger that made it scream???

straight cut gears are noisy aswell.but the pulleys are a big part of it.most new blowers have helical cut gears.quieter operation.

1low03gt 05-13-2010 08:23 PM

That's cool.Never knew that!!

Never new that as well! Interesting!

SNAKEBITE 05-14-2010 11:26 PM

Thansk guys. I saw a carbon fiber cai on Wed that I might like under my hood

Kaisoboy 05-15-2010 12:22 AM

Ooooo...carbon fibre!!!

ChadStang 05-16-2010 11:04 PM

When I put a k&n cai on my 01 Lightning it was louder after. My 04 Cobra had a cai also but the exhaust was so loud that that was all you could hear anyway.

Meatball 05-23-2010 07:21 AM

I have a Kenne Bell stage one on my 08 4.6 with 9lbs She whines pretty good but I have no experience with other blowers to use as comparison

SNAKEBITE 05-23-2010 10:03 PM

^^^I hear your system is a good one for noise:tup^^^

1low03gt 05-23-2010 10:10 PM

I'll never get to expirience the whine. As long as i have a 2V,she staying N/A.But down the road,i would like to put in a blown 4V of some sort!!!

Engine swap? With boost? When am I coming to London? Let's get this project started!!!

SNAKEBITE 05-24-2010 06:04 AM

Your a good man for volunteering:tup Oh when are you and the misses headed thisa way:chacha:

1low03gt 05-24-2010 02:40 PM

My plan is to do this swap when time, funds, and bigger place permit.:tup
I'd love to do it now,but with these times,i'm just glad for what i've got under the hood of my GT.It does the job for now. :)
But it would be sweet to pop the hood on my GT,and low,and behold a blown 4V is resting in the engine bay. :D
And thanks VAEM,i will keep you in mind when ever that time will come.

Yea, Vortech you can get straight cut gears and they have a wicked loud whine. That is what I run on my car. Its super obvious and doesnt leave you one ounce of stealthy-ness.

You can also just go timing gears and adds a bit of whine :)

A chap in Windsor with a 57 Chev had the gears and it sounded like he was blown:tup

rampant racing 05-31-2010 10:15 AM

my friend paul and my other buddy hank both have gear drive on there cars.you must get straight cut gears to get the blower sound.helical cut gears won't "cut it".hardeharhar
