Aftermarket CD Deck Install

Well, I tried on Saturday to install my audio system in the mustang. Everything was going good until I realized I had forgotten to get the wiring harness. So, off to Future Shop I go.

I get there, and there seems to be two or three different ones. Well, I know that I don't have the Mach 460 system, so I purchase the other one that's good for " 87 - 00 Mustangs".

Get back home, and just thought to try the connections before wiring them up on the cd one. Good thing too. Only one of the three connections work!!! So much for 87-00 compatibility. I'm now going to have to take the wiring harness back to Furture Shop tomorrow.

After searching Google, I came across info that some Mustang's have a separate amp to power the speakers, and not just the radio.

Have anyone installed cd players and come across this difficulty? As nice as the stock cd/radio sound, having my own stuff in there is nice, especially with MP3 cd's.

If any of you can help, (maybe with part numbers, etc) I own a 1998 Mustang V6 3.8 coupe. (no special packaging).
It would be greatly appreicated.

Thanks
wolfmann.

I ran into a simialar problem on my 87 stang. Went to bestbuy, bought the so-called proper harness and it didnt work. So i cut the old harnesses out and hard wired the stereo in using butt connectors. Works like a charm. However your car probably is different since its a 98.

thats how i always wire my stereo's...just hard wire them in.
no problems ever. but it does not look great if you pull the deck out with all the wires....

Well....I went back to Future Shop today to see if there was another connecter. There was, but I still wasn't sure. The sales guy told be to check with the install bay. So....I went over and they said I had bought the correct connecter, just I was looking at the wrong connections. For some reason, Ford decided to install an amp under the radio/cd player to power the speakers. The correct connections are attached to the metal framework. (mine was on the right side).

So, after getting that info, and spending almost 3hrs finishing everything (I have a sub and mp3 cd changer), it's already to go.

Hahaha, now all I need is an exhaust system that will overpower the sound system. :thumb1:

I had the same problem with my Mp3 deck going in to protection mode. So I disconnected the factory amp and rewirredeverything from the start and everything worked out good. After doing all that work and noticed after I was done. The factory amp is right in the back so you cant even see it. I dont know why for did that. It was very stupid IMO!
