anyone else hate our brakelights?

has anyone noticed the fact that us newer mustang owners have SIX tail lamps... but when we're on the brakes.. only four light up? I know a sequential kit will fix that, but i'm going with cobra tail lights that have an amber signal (as soon as i can find the other side for less than $300 :( ) so i still want the added safety of having all three light up.

so i'm working on testing the lights and everything. i'll hopefully have pics and a wiring diagram up tomorrow afternoon once i get my camera back from my GF.. lol

Never seen the tail lights of an 05 to 09 yet! :)

Seriously though I have not noticed it as the guys and gals around here have the sequencials installed.

Crafty 07-26-2009 06:35 PM

well like i said i am going with cobra tail lights and dont feel like spending the $100 for the kit for sequentials. i just want the added light when i have the brakes on. i'll have the amber light for turning so that's good enough for me lol

SNAKEBITE 07-27-2009 07:03 PM

Good catch and call. Mind you I am competely done doing anything to mine, seriously:chacha:

I installed the sequential kit for mine and noticed that the unlit lamps already have bulbs in them so all you have to do is put a jumper in to light them up too.

well update for everyone i went and finished everything up lastnight. everything is working out pretty sweet. i'll upload pics/vid after works tomorrow.

as for install it was really easy to make it look clean in my tinted regular tails. but the cobra tail was a bit harder (dont want the amber going off as well)

it's really a great mod for those that want the added safety for being seen (or just wanna stand out a little lol) :tup

1low03gt 08-02-2009 01:55 PM

A bunch of us had a cruise yesterday,so i paid attention to see what you were talking about, and your right!!....looks weird.
How did you get the two 3rd lights to come on with the other's?...in detail to please.....
I'm sure i can figure it out,but since you did it,it's easier for you to share the info.

The 99+ Mustangs have six tail lights, but when you hit the brakes only the outer four lights come on. It is easy to modify the left and right tailight modules so that all six light up when the brakes are applied. The inner sidelamp sockets are already set up for dual filament bulbs. They just lack a wire to supply power to the second (brake light) filament.
The following instructions and the four small photos come from an article by David Roe [see his web page]. Thanks David. I contributed the animation above and the the large annotated photo at the bottom of this page.

You need to scavage a few parts from a late model Ford tailight socket. I suggest you pick up a used socket at a junkyard. New ones can cost as much as $35 (Ford P/N F7ZZ-13411-AB). Take the socket apart by prying the cylindrical collar from the rear cap (it's just a force fit.) Then remove two wires with pins at one end, as shown above. These wires will be used to modify the inner sidelamp sockets in the left and right tailight modules.

Remove the trunk liner to get at the four nuts holding the tailinght assemblies on the car. When those nuts are removed you can unplug the wiring harness, push the rubber pass-through grommet out toward the rear, and remove the tailight assemblies from the car.

Remove the sidelamp socket (shown above) from each assembly. Notice that it has two stock wires with pins already in place. You are going to insert one of the wires you scrounged in step 1 (also shown) to make a connection to the second filament in this socket.

http://www.miracerros.com/mustang/brake_3.jpg

Take the new wire and push its pin into the hole provided so that it makes contact with the unused electrical tab.

http://www.miracerros.com/mustang/brake_4.jpg

Use a razor blade to make a slot in the rubber strain relief plug for the new wire. Then push the stain relief plug into place.

Reinstall the cylindrical collar, the white rubber gasket, and the original 2-filament bulb. Then reinstall the sidelamp socket into the tailight assembly.

Splice/solder the new wire to one of the existing green/red brake leads coming out of the other brake socket at a terminal marked "MAJOR", as shown below.

crap.. photos dont work.. but here's basically all you need for pics.
for those of you that worry... the other bulb is a dual bulb like the others so no relay/fuses are needed

1low03gt 08-03-2009 08:32 PM

Cool,thanks.
Is there anyway to get all the picks up?
Save them to your pics folder, then host them to where you normally host them so we can see them.
Then i will print this screen, and save it. :tup

Crafty 08-04-2009 11:48 AM

yea not a problem. been at the cabin all weekend so i'll try to get on it tonight

1low03gt 08-04-2009 09:01 PM

No prob's,and thanks!!

Crafty 09-23-2009 10:30 PM

you try this yet? i just got my cobra tails on and omg is it a sweet combo :tup

1low03gt 09-24-2009 06:46 PM

No,i haven't had time to try it.It might end up my winter project.

Crafty 09-24-2009 07:10 PM

ok. i have a bunch of sockets with pins (even though you really only need two extra pins) that i can send your way if needed. or anyone else interested.

1low03gt 09-25-2009 10:38 PM

I'll keep you posted,thanks. :tup

Getting the 3 left brake turn signal lights is not as easy as putting a jumper wire in. I tried this and when wired that way, both the inside bulbs from left and right light up. There must be a shared feedback line . The unlit bulb has 4 wires (2 are black), the middle bulb has 4 wires (one is black) the outside bulb has 4 wires, 2 are black).
I don't know what happens when the "unlit" bulb is cut away from the wire harness and ground and positive is jumped to it but it may mess up the existing lighting. Anyone ever try this?

Crafty 09-26-2009 07:35 PM

there is no need to do that.. all you need is a pin (the inside only has two where as the outter two have three). insert the pin into slot labled "major" with a rumper wire properly connected to the next bulb lead labeled the same thing. i know this works cause my tinted stock lights worked fine, and my cobra tails too...

I wonder if this also works on the 96-98 tails as well....?
My car is a 94 but I put the 96-98 tails in with the matching harness and the only thing that changed was my blinker....it blinks really fast.
But same thing only the outers light up or what ever....
