Scratch repair concerns

A deep hairline scratch showed up on the pony,it looks as if it is right down to the metal. As you can imagine this is causing me fits, mostly from not knowing how it happened. I'm wondering if it can be taken to any body shop or if I'm better off going to the dealership.(not where I bought it,not happy with their body shop) What kind of cost can I expect? It's about an inch long, hairline with a couple surrounding it that look as though just scratched the clearcoat. tried Meguiars scratch x and the results were minimal

damn sorry to hear. I know I would take mine to MotorCity Collision on Drouillard and have Mike have a look at it.

awww....that sucks! I bought the Ford paint touch up pen as "preventative maintenance" You know, if you buy it you'll never need to use it. I know it wouldn't be a good fix...maybe only useful as a bare metal cover up in an inconspicuous spot. Let us know how you make out....curious myself at what something like that would cost.

Damn, that sucks. I don't know of any good body shops in Windsor. Windsor is Mustang country though - I'm sure one of our members will chime in soon with some help.

I don't know how well it works but

Where's it at? Maybe touchup paint would do the trick - those pens are slick, nicer than the old brush.

It's on the left rear quarter above the wheel.Maybe I'll give the pen a try,if it doesn't look good I'll take it in to get fixed

That really sucks! The best way to have it fixed is threw a body shop. If your not to picky, then the touch pen/stick from Ford will work.

I actually used to fix this exact type of thing at FORD Talbotville ( retired now). New cars do get scratched, chipped and repaired. If it's just the clearcoat, try the Meguiars again. I use this and have had great results. Make sure you do it in the shade and don't get it too hot ( swirls, halos). You may have to build up the coats with it so multiple coats might work. If your into the paint, try the touch-up as others have already said, but if your really picky( I am too) you'll likely need to repaint. It can be blown-in ( spotted in) if the painter is good enough ( experienced) , but if he/she isn't, you'll see it. Matching the colour can be tough too, but not impossible. I'm guessing its on your 2012, so that's a good thing. The paint hasn't had time to fade. But I've seen repairs done in the plant with new cars and new paint where the colour was off. But I painted for years and something like that might not be noticeable to the average person. I just used Maguiars on my 2009 and the wife just about flipped watching. I had to sand ( borrowed sandpaper from past job) with extremely fine sandpaper ( Diamond something or other) and flattened it out first. A spot about the size of a toonie. Then the Meguairs. You can't see it now. But before trying anything I've said about sanding ( IF you do) make sure you know what your doing. Not a job for the fainthearted. Hope this helps.

I would be all over the bodyshop on this kind of problem. i have been known to sell my blemished car for a new one as well :banghead:

spdracer 08-31-2011 08:54 PM

The thing that really frosts my ass is there's a good chance that this happened at the dealership when I had it in to get the tint fixed.I made the mistake of not doing a walkaround before taking the car and lo and behold the next day I noticed it. Live and learn. :banghead:

Apocalypse Pony 09-01-2011 05:00 AM

Yah, nothing like a lesson from the school of hard knocks. Those are the ones that work best for me though, hope you get 'er all fixed up bud.

SNAKEBITE 09-01-2011 05:45 PM

I ALWAYS DO THE WALKAROUND ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS lol

Red Pony 09-01-2011 06:12 PM

Yep....I had a fender scratched (not on my Stang) from valet parking in Toronto. Didn't notice it until 2 hours later after I stopped at the rest area. Cost me $250 to get it repainted.

BLKnRD09GT 09-01-2011 11:53 PM

^^^^^^ Good advice for above. For all of us !

Apocalypse Pony 09-02-2011 05:04 AM

I've done walkarounds when I first get rental cars to make sure they don't try to stick me with anything, then I make them come out when I return it so nothing mysteriously appears after I'm gone. Good advice all around.

SNAKEBITE 09-02-2011 06:37 PM

Good call on the rentals ap

BLKnRD09GT 09-03-2011 12:42 AM

More good advice ^^^^. I rented a car in England two years ago. Walked around with the guy renting it to me. Like I said before, I worked painting and repairing cars for many years and while looking at this rental I didn't want to appear overly picky so i wasn't. When I took the car back, the guy who walked around checking for any blemishes was probably as picky as I would/should have been at the start!

Lesson learned!

SNAKEBITE 09-03-2011 12:46 AM

^^^go figure eh.
