Dealer applied sealer vs. today's top waxes
A couple buddies of mine paid dearly to have their dealership apply a paint sealer to their new Mustangs,I was told that it was a paste that was applied.I wonder how todays top waxes would compare.

It's a waste of money to have the dealer apply it. You can buy paint sealant from any autobody shop and apply it yourself. I bought a bottle of paint sealant in 2005 for $35.00 and applied it myself in about 1 1/2 hours. Goes on like a liquid car wax, dry, wipe off, then buff. While pay a dealership $300 - 350.00 when you can do it yourself for minimal cost. I think a paint sealant is good to apply before a wax application. On the other hand their are many good car waxes such as Meguiars that provide the same protection, if not better than a sealant in recent formulated products.

I've used paint sealers and it doesn't work any better than wax as far as I'm concerned, and Ray is right. It is under $50 a bottle. I can understand paying for the time to put it on but not $400+. If they charged $125-$150 I think it would be fair, but why not do it yourself. It is also a great way to get to know your car and find any imperfections and paint flaws that need to be addressed.

Anything the dealership can do, the aftermarket jobbers can do it better and cheaper. You're paying for the convenience of having it done before you pick the car up, and they're not specialists. Waste of cash IMHO, and considering the markup on those services, I have no doubt they make more money on service than sales.
