Tire question

Tire question

Does anyone have experience with the NT01 tire on a road course? I am looking at getting a set but someone mentioned that they may have square edge sidewalls that could tend to wear quickly with hard cornering.

No direct experience with them (yet), but looking at the carcass shape, I'd suggest that you would want to be sure to have plenty of negative camber for road course use, otherwise on a nose-heavy Mustang you would be likely to knock the edges off them!



Overall they are supposed to be a good working tire, I have a few friends running them. Not as fast as something like the Hoosier R6 or BFG G-Force R1, but less expensive and better wear. Could be driven on the street at full tread, but probably not a great idea. I plan to try a set on my 89, partly because they are one of the only track-ready tires still made in 245/50R16.

Have you considered the Toyo R888. It looks more like a grooved competion rain tire. The Nitto NT01 looks agressive too. Didn't you try some Kumhos last year, how were those?
What size are you running?
There are couple of guys in NB running the R888s. Also heard there is some issues getting Nittos at a reasonable price in Canada.

I will be running Kumho V710's again this year for autoslalom. They are a good tire, but we wore out a set last year before the end of the season with 2 of us competing at almost all local events plus some lapping and time attack at the track. I acquired another set of FRPP 17 x 9 rims so was thinking of trying a set of NT01's for the track only this year, as my son plans to take the driving school and get more track time than last year with the car. The Nitto's are cheaper and potentially longer lasting than the V710, though probably a bit slower.

Most reviews I have read on the R888 is that it is good on lightweight cars, but can tend to overheat on heavier ones.

I can get the Nitto's shipped by Discount Tire Direct to a service in Calais for $860 and then pick them up and bring them across myself, so not a bad deal.

The V710's cost me over $1,200 last year plus tax.

High Speed Driving School is the long weekend in May! I will be there helping out and I think my son will be taking the Bullitt in the school. Watch the ARMS forums for the announcement.

I will investigate the R888 a bit more, maybe they are a viable option and have the added advantage of being decent wet tires.
