porting pi heads

porting pi heads

I was woundering if anyone on here can tell me who can port pi heads good and at a good cost.... i dont want to spend a ton since i still have to get a set of cams and valve springs , but i do want these heads ported right to get the most out of them.

mike grunte racing in sarnia.has been doing it a long time.builds great engines aswell.has a 32 austin bantam that runs 8.17 @ 162mph+ with a small block 332cid.checks all porting work with a superflow 600 flowbench.prices are very reasonable.he is retired and does this now.he did the heads on my mustang v6 aswell,he took the intake flow from 188 cfm @ .500 lift to 236cfm @ .500 lift.his number is 519-542-8618.he is kind of a quiet fella so don't expect a long conversation on the phone and he won't give you a price till he sees them .he is cheaper and pays more attention to detail than ANYBODY i know in the racing industry.he has been racing without a year off for over 45 years.that's dedication.tell him i (gary fraser)sent you.please don't waste his time if ya think your gonna get a good portn polish for a couple hundred bucks.doing a port n polish without a flowbench may help a bit but it is not accurate at all and can actually cost flow if done wrong.this is the man to see.

Well roughly , with a flow bench , would he do the pi heads for 300 dollars cash per head ? The guy in Sarnia.

Not to take anything away from anyone, but i think you would like someone with experience with the mod motors. They can be a bit touchy and not respond well to things that a SBF would respond well to. (velocity opposed to volume etc.)
Have you looked into getting a set of used ported heads? With the arrival of the TFS heads there are a lot out there.

call him and talk to him yourself.that is why i gave his number.mike did the heads on my 2008 v6 stang and was able to match the best flow numbers of the best heads sold in the states for my motor.also keep in mind with a port n polish you will need a new valve job as alot of the flow increase comes from a proper valve job for the task at hand and that applies to any head on the face of the earth. he also built a motor for his grandson's nissan,it was a 2.4l four valve jobby and made over 500 hp with lots of turbo boost.he knows his stuff.i have yet to dyno test my 4.0l vs since rebuilding it but i made around 500 BEFORE THE HEADS were done.i am expecting to be close to 575hp with the head work and new custom headers and exhaust work.

also not to take anything away from anyone ,but how do you know the used heads were ported properly if they don't have any flow numbers with them? i have seen lots of so called ported heads that flowed so badly between each port that the heads were almost junk and really weren't worth trying to save.there really isn't anything anyone can tell mike about porting is all i have to say.be it max flow or high velocity all the way across the rpm band,he knows about it.max flow is only a part of porting and i would rather have high numbers under the curve anyday.my motor only revs to 6000 rpm and it is all i need.i have stock puny cams in my v6 motor btw and it ran 12.50 with a bad trans before the heads were done.i am dying to see what it will run next year.we machined a set of sb2 small block chevy titanium nascar valves to fit my heads aswell.i used them because they have a 7mm stem same as the stock valves in the 4.0.

hey sheldomer,good news.i just called mike for ya and he says that $300 per head is in the ball park but keep in mind about the valvejob.he does not do a run of the mill valvejob..it could be as many as 5 angles and takes some time and is done with special cutters and a computer guided vertical mill not hand held stones on an angle drill type motor.the cost for the valvejob is usually $300 as well so figure $900-1000 complete job.the heads should be cleaned properly and disassembled if you want to save a few bucks.if i were you i would still call him though.and don't forget when he is finished you will actually know what the heads flow,not someones best guess.hope this helps you out.

Considering that you will still be using the stock bottom end, your choice of cams is limited due to PTV contact. So you will not really take advantage of the extra flow from the port.
I would get cams + springs, then consider spending the money on headers or gears if you have not done them yet. Gears are the best bang for buck mod period (apart from FI)
Or just get a used supercharger kit and slap that on.
