I recently added a sub and amp to my shaker 500 stereo. I wanted on oem look, so wanted to keep the stock headunit and keep most of the trunk space. I did some research and attempted my own budget install, and spent less than $800.

Although I tapped into the rear 6x9s for a signal which was much easier.

Not bad, how does it sound? Trunk lid and rear window shaking?

 

It sounds really good. Can really dial it in on both amp and lc2i. The amp is only 250wx1 @ 2 ohm, which is what I am running the sub at. Not earth shattering loud, but still big improvment. Mirrors shake and whatnot, but not driving down the road with a rattling trunk. I have built several car stereos over the years, and this is one of the more simple setups. Just enough to add a bit of bass, more sound quality than spl.

JL was always my favorite. I haven't built a stereo system in years, the factory stuff is usually ok for me. The Shaker 500 is pretty weak in the Bass Dept, but I'm more than happy with the output of the Shaker Pro in my car.

 

JL has one of my favorites too, although have only used their equipment once before. Other builds I have done, I have used Kicker subs, Rockford subs, even a Kenwood sub. All though I have noticed over the years quality of those products now a days isnt what it used to be. JL has stay the same from what I've been told.

Ya the shaker pro or 1000 is what inspired me for the corner box in the same location. I looked into just adding the oem equipment, but would have costed a lot more.

 

Small update. I downloaded some songs with solid bass, and notice the top of the trunk was rattling a little bit. Visions had Dynamat on sale, so I got a xtreme custom kit for $35. Even ended up with a little left over.

I've always wanted to try that stuff but never have. Is it fairly easy to work with? Make much of a difference?

 

Yes it is very easy to work with. I did 150 sq feet on an old car. I used a brand called brown bread. It is easy to lay, and I have a small roller that came in that kit to ensure it is sticking to everything. Issue I had with brown bread was the actual cutting of the pieces. Gummed up my cutters pretty bad.

I found the dynamat easier to cut for sure. And just as easy to lay. I still had my old roller from the first time, so used that to roll everything on as good as possible. Then I just used a screw driver to poke holes where all the clips go to hold the trunk lid cover on. Had it done within an hour. I did cut my fingers a couple times using a razor blade, but thats because I was rushing as day light was coming to an end.

It definately makes a difference. Makes the car sound more solid, hear less road noise, etc.
