1999 V6 3.8L Auto - Any ideas?
Hello all. I've pored through this forum but can't seem to find exactly what I'm looking for, although Crafty has left some good stuff. Anyways...
My daily driver is the 1999. Bought it used from a cool cop, its beautifully maintained. Its developed a transmission problem, but I can't afford to get it looked at right now. Point is, I'm very happy with it. However - its a bit sluggish. I know Mustangs are heavy cars. But, still - she takes her time off the mark, but then gets going pretty good.:chacha: I've been kicking around ideas of what to do to squeeze some more power out, or at least harnessing the available power better. I don't know much about the way the engine works - my specialty in newer Mustangs is drooling at them as they fly by. So... does anyone know of any good guides, themselves or otherwise, on ways to mod my car? My funds are limited right now, but I have NO problem with putting money in it down the road. Thanks all  Adam |
just going to toss some ideas:
wheels/tires lowering springs caster/camber kit T-loc with 4.10 gears for auto J-mod (VAP auto) windstar intake kit Udp those are a good start for anyone really. and for an automatic a tuner can be extreamly useful from what i hear any questions and i'll do my best. if not i'm sure someone else can :tup lol add pics |
Those are great ideas but um, I don't know what most of them are, or specifics on how to get / use them. As screams of "N00B" echo across the forums, can you explain to me what they do, and where to get them, et cetera? Or, point me to an (easy) guide for all that stuff? That'd all be phenomenal.

If a GT's wont work, you can just buy what you need. |
That's a good idea. My first plan too was too get dual exhaust on it. Didn't think of used GT pipes though, just figured I'd get a custom system put in. But, the dual exhaust, and lowering the whole car, were my original two ideas. After that...clueless.

Gears and trac loc will net you the best bang for your buck. I also have a 99, albeit a manual, but gears will completely change the way it drives. Especially from a dead stop. As recommended above 4.10's are just perfect for an auto.

Lots of good shops in Milton area, MPW/steeda and Dasilva are two or if you don't mind a drive Misener is in Brantford.
oh and do a t-loc and gears out back for sure!!!! |
I would deff go to Steeda if you are near them. they have almost everything you would need to give your stang a good kick. plus they have the shop to install it all and tune it for you. thay should be at least a bit of help explaining things.
Steeda Ford Performance Parts - Steeda.ca :tup |
Hey guys, thanks all for the great ideas. I have a catalogue on the way from Steeda, and a ton of good ideas. Going to start with the T-loc and gears, and suspension, and exhaust. I'll keep everyone posted with my progress, such as how comfy it is to live in the Mustang when it (in the 1973) eats me out of house and home.
But seriously thanks to everyone for the good ideas. I'm looking forward to the reworking of this car! |

Sounds like a plan! I'll add that intake to my long ridiculous list. Thanks!
|
honestly when it comes to a cold air intake on our v6's... just creep ebay and find the best looking/cheapest one.. they do almost nothing...
|
Nitrous is cheap and pretty easy to install
|
Crafty - how come the intake isn't effective for V6s?
ChadStang - You're right, but I'm always iffy about Nitrous because I'd have to keep replacing it. |

Well, I'm convinced. I'll slap on any old nice-sounding CAI when I have around 100 bucks to spare. Until then, gears it is!
