2.3L Gears

Hi,
I have a 2.3L 1990 Mustang LX. Can anyone tell me what the stock gears are in the rear end; and what would be a good replacement to get more performance without sacrificing to much fuel economy?

Reaper 12-16-2008 07:20 PM

Do you have an auto or stick?

johnny5 12-16-2008 07:25 PM

Sorry, its auto

Reaper 12-16-2008 07:46 PM

For some reason I want to say 3.73.... But I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks,
what gears would you put in the back, that won't kill your fuel effecieny?

Reaper 12-16-2008 07:59 PM

The 2.3 doesn't really rev that high, so I wouldn't go much higher than 4.10s, and maybe a trac-loc while you're in the rear end.

Should be either 3.45 or 3.73. If you get the axle code off the VIN sticker on the driver's door, you can tell from that ... post it up here and I will check the parts catalogue, or just Google it. :)

what part of the VIN will tell me what the stock gears are?

Thanks

fast Ed 12-18-2008 01:06 PM

The VIN digits won't tell you, there isn't a code as part of it like the engine. But on that info label on the driver's door, there are a bunch of codes on the bottom line. The axle code should be over to the right side.

Yes there is a stick on the drivers door or door jam at the very bottom there will be 2 letters AX = Axle, under it will be like a Z or some letter.

Have a look at this page I think it might come in handy for you. You can decode your VIN and find out what gears you have by looking at the fallowing.

Hope this helps.

No Problem, but does the site work for a 90 mustang? Couldn't find information that goes back that far on the site.

Hi,
the axle vin if "F", can you tell me what the gears are in the rear end

Thanks

According to the site Stang Illusions 5.0L posted, F= 3.45. Which is kind of puzzeling, because I thought automatics only came with 3.73's...

johnny5 12-18-2008 08:34 PM

Are those gears for a 2.3L (4 cyl.) or for a 5.0 (V8)?

Thanks again

Reaper 12-18-2008 08:42 PM

Either or... The RPO code for the gears will be the same regardless.

brattstanger91 01-29-2009 09:19 PM

i would do a 8.8 v8 rear end swap with a 3.73:1 gearing in it thats wat im running in my 2.3L turbo and it dosn;t reve n/e hire or decreade in fuel ecnomy

hows the acceleration with it, any better, or the same; since it doesn't rev higher and doesn't effect fuel economy

brattstanger91 01-30-2009 07:52 PM

o hell ya it gets up to speed way faster that it use to but
iv also add the turbo at the same time
so im not to sure on that one
with the stock n/a 2.3L
but i admation it would
also

IT'S POSI!!!!

i second the advice of dropping the rearend out for one that came out of a v8.

all your brake parts bolt right up to it no problem.

although the bolts are a pain in the ass.. .lol
