2.3T Mods

Hi,
With an 1985 TC what can be done to make more power with them. I saw it was only rated at 155hp compared to the 190hp that the 87-88 made. What caused the difference in hp. Is the 85 TC a good motor, also what tranny is in it as it is auto an A4LD or the C4? Was planning on running an 87-88 with 15 psi so was looking to make about the same with the 85 what would be needed.

I might of, it's an 1985 TC, the only problems i have heard over the phone is it is auto (want to go t-5) and it is missing the turbo. Going to try to go look this saturday hopefully. If i pick it up there should be a build thread around April, and a parts thread right away.

I hope i can find a donor car before April or it isn't happening for 4-5 years because of University. since with my program i don't get any summers off depending on the school, and need the car to get to and from school and co-op

the 87-88 made more powere because they came stock with an intercooler and a better electrical system

put a front mount intercooler and upgraded turbo and bigger injectors and you should be around the 190-200 mark

i have an 83 tc that im building and should be able to push around 6-700 hp when complete

check out TurboFord.net Home for more info

I'm probably necroposting but here goes.

I have an 85 Turbo Coupe that is replacing the SVO as my race car [which isnow stock and for sale]. Anyways, 85 TC made 175 HP, and had a bit hotter cam in them same as the 85.5-86 SVOs did, and the TC still kept the ,63 turbine housing where the SVOs got the smaller more restrictive .48 turbine [both were T3 turbo.

87 / 88 brought better electronics like mentioned, but a smaller IHI turbo, and wentback to the smaller non SVO / 85-86 TC cam. Merkurs used this same TC/SVO cam hence the 175 HP NON intercooled rating they had.

My 85 TC with: L series EEC and large vam from 88 TC, cone filter, ported E6 ex mani, stock open down pipe, a line pulled off to run 18 psi, ET streets, skinnies [T Bird spares of all things lol], and bypass the PS pump with a short belt went 13.66 @ 99 MPH.

Fuel pump, regulator, injectors, turbo, intercooler, motor top to bottom, trans, clutch, 3.45 7 1/2" rear, were stock. We added a gallon of 112 to 1/4 of ultra 94 because I knew the car was going a tad lean and well, you can band aid a lot of stuff with race gas.

Everyone says vids or it didn't happen lol so here ya go
YouTube - zzzz10

Ford put SO much potential in the 2.3L turbo car combo that is already in there and people rarely use it! All these engines need to run a solid 12 in a 3000 lb race weight Mustang, even a IHI equipped motor [i've done it] are:
-A HEALTHY running motor with w/ a tune up.
-5 sp
-3.55 or 3.73s, even stock 3.45 will get it done in the early cars [3.45s went 12s in my SVO..]
-Later 87/88 TC EEC or 85.5-86 SVO EEC TC ones are common and cheap.
-Big VAM w/ a cone filter
-Walbro 255 pump,
-adj regulator [love my BBK] and f/p guage you can see going down the track.
-ported stock "E6" casting Ex manifold
-stock down pipe run open or cut out
-slicks or ET streets
-skinnies help.
-bypass power steering pump
-Home made or $50 gillis boost controller online...
-race gas
-T3 turbos - 20-25 psi.. If running a T3 20 psi should get you 12.70s in a well tuned car, 25 psi will go 12.50s.
-IHI Turbos - I wired the w/g shut and went 12.80s @ 103.9 boost hovered around 22-23 psi. which was all the IHI would make on a stock longblock, and I wouldn't expect it to love long at those turbine shaft speeds lol.
-Timing you can leave it stock, it will get it done, but you can also unplug the spout, set the timing to 26-27* [RACE GAS A MUST] and leave spout unplugged tighten dizzy down, and run it.. and gain a few more tenths.

Anyways these little motors have a ton of potential if you just tune it up and optimize what is there. Too many people run out and buy all kindsa stuff before they even run a baseline like above. Easiest 12s from an older car I have ever had.

Wikipedia ... Gotta love it.

The Ford Pinto used the OHC version, a 2.3 L (2302 cc) unit introduced in 1974 which has a 96.0 mm (3.78 in) bore and 79.5 mm (3.13 in) stroke. This version lasted until 1997 in various guises. The earliest units produced 66 kW (88 hp) and 160 N·m (118 ft·lbf). This engine has also been known as the Lima engine, after the Lima Engine plant in Lima, Ohio, where it was first manufactured (it was also later manufactured in Brazil).

In 1979-80, a draw-through, non-intercooled turbo version was produced for Mustang Cobras and some Capris. Lack of dealership and owner training resulted in many stuck turbochargers and other maintenance problems. They were limited to 5 PSI of boost though Ford Motorsport sold a wastegate with an adjustable rod which allowed an increase of up to 9 PSI. It was used in this carbureted form in a number of passenger cars, from the Fairmont Futura Turbo to the 1979 Indy Pace Car edition Mustang.

In the 1980s, a turbocharged and intercooled version was used in the Ford Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. This was made practical by the introduction of Ford's EECIV port fuel injection system; 1983's 2.3 Liter Turbo was the first production implementation of that advance in technology, which paved the way for across the board use in many Ford passenger car and light truck engines; however, the turbo version never made it into any Ford trucks. Output for this turbo/intercooled version was 142 kW (190 hp) and 325 N·m (240 ft·lbf) for the 1987-88 models with the (T-5) 5-speed manual transmission.

The turbocharged and intercooled 2.3 was also used in the 1984-86 Mustang SVO, while the 1983–1984 Mustang TurboGT, 1985-89 Merkur XR4Ti, 1983–1986 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe and 1984–1986 Mercury Cougar XR7 all skipped the intercooler on their turbo versions, which dropped output to 180 hp (130 kW) and 205 ft·lbf (278 N·m) of torque. The SVO Mustang's output increased in 1985½ to 205 HP.

A dual-spark version (with two spark plugs per cylinder and distributor-less ignition) was introduced in the 1989 Ford Ranger and 1991 Ford Mustang. This version produced 78 kW (105 hp) and 183 N·m (135 ft·lbf).

LOL, well I didn't get my info from there... infact a few of the things they state are wrong...

83-84 GT Turbo, RS Turbo, Turbo Coupe, Cougar turbo, T5 or auto HP = 145 HP @ 10 psi.

1985 -1989 Merk 5 sp 175 HP
85-86 TC same set up as Merks down to EECs and small vam 5 sp - 175 HP
Both of the above with C3 auto 155 Hp / 180 ft lbs..

85.5 SVO - 205 HP 245 ft lbs
86 SVO - 200 HP 240 ft lbs

87/88 TC 5 sp 190 Hp / 240 ft lbs
87/88 TC auto 155 Hp/ 180 ftlbs.

Also the carb turbos, Ford never really released an official HP rating but it was discovered a good running one made 132 HP on 5.5-6 psi. The 1980-81 McClarens used the carb turbos which, really didn't have much in the way of mods, just a free flow exhaust and a bost controller when set to 11 psi made 175 HP.

Believable because I had a 1982 Capri RS Turbo [Canada got carb turbos on 82 US did not] and lightened the car up a lot, [sound insulation, back seats, sway bars,] and all I had done was a K&N filter, modded stock air cleaner, MSD coil, cut off open stock down pipe and I disconnected some vac lines and the car made 15-16 psi and on race fuel it wailed, I took out a 455 trans am, and a 5.0L Capri. It ran very low 14s.. but after a few passes it would start to heat soak... I suspect the 9:1 compression was what made it so fast as such moderate [by todays standards] boost...I'm sure it was lean too [no carb jet changes or tinkering] and the good gas band aided that.

LOL ... Oops. Sorry for the bad info. Not too familiar with the 2.3's. Damn Wikipedia!

But I read it on the Internet ... how could it be wrong? The Internet is ALWAYS right. Isn't it?
