Our '92 Mustang (2.3L) is leaking coolant from what appears to be where the lower radiator hose enters the engine block (I presume this is the water pump). The vehicle is not running hot and the water pump is not making any noises, but clearly coolant is dripping from this area.

Do I need to replace the water pump, or could it be something else?

It could be the pump,loose clamp or some corosion under the rad hose.

Probably the pump itself, like Nick said, check the hoses first. There's a spit hole on the bottom of the pump behind the pulley, if it's coming from there-you need a pump.

I am on my third pump on the 92 (4cyl) and like the guys say check the drip hole at the bottom of the pump, on a side note I recommend changing the thermostat while your in there

Thanks for the advice, I'll try to get a closer look at where the leak is coming from, unfortunately I don't have a anyway to get the car off the ground and it's a little tight in that part of the engine bay.

If it is the water pump and given the engine is running fine (not overheating or making any unusal noises), is there any reason not to wait until it fails?

I put a little stop leak product in the radiator recently and it appears to have stopped the leak, but the guy at Partsource seemed to agree it was the water pump that was about to fail.

You can wait till it fails, but thats always at the most in opportune moment it could be.. and if your car does overheat you could cause some engine damage..

my engine was overheating and leaking from the water pump. i tookit to my mechanc and he said the heads are ready to go. i put stop leak in the rad and it doesnt overheat and the leaking from the water pump stopped.
