Engine Noise

Engine Noise

Can anyone suggest a good Halifax area mechanic familiar with our motors that can help diagnose a ticking noise?

No noise until engine is warmed up, then you can hear a ticking from 1500 rpm up. Cant hear at higher rpm’s but probably too loud anyway. Seems to tick only under a light load, seems to disappear when you take your foot off the gas and coast and can’t hear it at idle. Noise rises and falls with the rpm’s. Other than the noise the motor runs and pulls as it always did.

Not sure about shops in your area, but were you able to determine if it's coming from the top end or bottom end?

I always defer my questions to Art Visser. He works at a local Ford Dealer and he is a racer. He was at the track last rae weekend at the JCM race.

I've read that TSB...doesn't sound like mine as it says "engine tick noise that is present at all temperatures during idle" which mine doesn't appear to be. Haven't listened with a stethoscope yet, but it sure sounds like the top end to me.

Which dealership should I look for Art Vissers at? The name sounds familiar but not sure if I have met him yet. Soon time to put it away, but sure would like to get this issue resolved first.

Well, I got in to see Art. He says it is in the valvetrain on the passenger side and believes it is a noisy lifter. He said not to worry about it and wait until I can hear it all the time before doing anything about it. I'm not so sure....I hate strange noises, especially in the engine. Will have to think about it over the winter. He said I could just replace all the lifters on that side where it was hard to pinpoint which one it was.

He also said to check the end play on the crankshaft ..if it has too much play it can affect the oil distribution I guess? How would you go about doing that?

I guess another solution would be to get a set of trick flow heads.....

Not a bad idea, would be a good time to save, and upgrade the heads.

It's a long winter, if you have access to the car, I would have a look at the valve train on that side and get that noise taken care of. The last thing you want is to miss a few events next year with a repair that lays you up for a week or two.
On the crank shaft end play, not sure about that. I have only checked that during engine assembly. On my old race engines. It is basically the gap on the crank shaft thrust bearings. I am not sure how that effects oil, but if Art say so, I would believe him.
