Svo intake manifold
I was looking online about possibly doing an intake manifold swap on my 96 non pi engine and i came across people talking about the frpp svo intake manifold.I have been looking online for one but they seem to be pretty rare.Do anyone here have any experience with on of these or even have alittle more info on them. All i have read about them is how much people love them so i was thinking about possibly trying to track one down.
I didn't know that they ever made one for the 4.6. I like the Bullitt intake the best. I remember reading a mm&ff mag years ago and they had a showdown between a 99 Cobra, 01 Bullitt, and 03 Mach 1. Mach 1 was 1st in all categories but the Bullitt came in 2nd.
From what I have read the bullit intake is based off of the svo intake it is suppost to be like a bullit intake for npi heads.

I noticed a difference once i installed the Bullitt intake on my GT. It pulls threw the rpm a lot smoother, stronger, and doesn't seem to fall on it's face compared to the stock plastic intake. The runners on the SVO, and Bullitt intake are larger in diameter, and shorter in length compared to the plastic intake, which allows higher rpm usage. Some will say it's a waste of money but if you can score one on a steal, it will work great with supporting mods. I would've never done the swap if i didn't get a good deal on my Bullitt intake. One thing you will need to remember if you do find an SVO intake, some of the stock intake hardware on your GT will not work. I know with the Bullitt intake i had to get the proper Bullitt fuel rails, throttle cable, cruise cable with bracket, alt. bracket, under the intake metal coolant tube, egr tube, throttle body, plus being a PI, i had to swap to the romeo non PI cam covers with the driver side oil fill cause the passenger side oil fill is in the way of the intake plenum, and inlet tube. I was lucky enough to get the inlet tube, and proper alt. with the intake. Here is a guy on the Corral.net trying to sell an SVO intake... Interesting, they look very similar. I assume the heads would be a big part of the pi power gain though.
The PI heads would be the bigger gain, but the SVO intake was designed to match with the non PI heads. The intake could be matched to the PI heads with some port work from what i have read.
Actually i was looking at the one on corral thats what gave me the idea.I was thinking if i could find an svo intake at a decent price i could bolt that on for the time being and when i eventually do trickflow heads and a set of cams i could just port match the svo intake. So this way i could have alittle more power now and still use it with my future build.
Well, if you can pull it off, it would be worth it in the long haul of your build.
We'll guys my next question would be is the dual 65mm throttle body alittle too much for what I have at the moment because I am not running boost? I was thinking with the new intake, dual 65mm throttle it would be a good idea for a new Maf and possibly 24# injectors because after the install I would still need a new tune.

It wouldn't hurt you.

ROTFL ... That was good. LOL
Ok i tracked down and bought an svo intake , I will keep you guys updated as i do the install in the spring.
That's pretty cool. Where did you find one?
I bought one off a guy from georgia paid $900 usd shipped for the manifold,a bunch of hardware and a bbk 65mm cobra throttle body.I bought the one listed on corral.
Nice, that is a good deal, it was pretty much a complete kit!!
Ya i am pretty excited, now i just need to find a new cold air intake i am not sure which one will fit i was told the 96-98 cobra cai or the 01 bullit but i was told the cobra is a closer match.I am still debating if i should pick up a new maf and 24lbs injectors to go along with it as well.
Just get the JLT for the 96-98 Cobra's, and call it a day. :tup
1low03gt any chance you know which cold air intake would fit a 96 gt with the Svo intake. I wasn't sure which to buy either the 96 -98 cobra Cai or the 01 bullit Cai. I was hoping to buy a painted jlt Cai but I can't seem to find any info on which aftermarket Cai was the best fitment ?
You will need the '96 to '98 Cobra inlet tube, or cold air intake kit.:tup
How's the install going, or have you started? |
I havent even started yet i bought an 08 cts for a daily so i have been dumping money into modding that all winter but now i am getting the itch to start working on the mustang.I was thinking about holding off on the svo intake install this summer because i was planning on doing trick flow heads this fall so i figured there wasnt much point bolting the intake on for a few months just to pull it off to get port matched to the new heads a few months later. But i am going to try and book my stang into zero to sixty some time in the next few weeks to get the lentech streetbruiser transmission tranny i bought last year installed.I still have a pretty big install list for the spring and summer.I have the transmission, aluminum driveshaft, stiffler crossmember and new torque converter (need to order next week when i get home) all hopefully going in asap. And a jlt catch can, eibach sway bars with steeda aluminum mounts,m&m caster camber plates, steeda ball joints and bumpsteer kit all still waiting to go in as well. And on top of that i still need to get my saleen tonneau painted too....... Its going to be a busy spring lol
I see, and understandable! And man that is quite the list of stuff to do, LOL! It's gonna keep you, and your pockets real busy!! :tup
Lol ya it seems like lately it would be easier if i was just paid in parts instead of getting a cheque
i am suprised you didnt just go with a typoon intake manifold instead or the bullet , way cheaper and what difference is that one going to make in power numbers like rwhp numbers cause thats were it counts , and cost...
Well i wanted the svo because originally i was going to put in on and run it this summer with my stock npi heads ,then when i was ready to move up too trickflow heads i was going to get it port matched so i could use it now and then also use it with my future build but i fell so far behind on getting my other projects done to the car that i just dont know if i will have the time to install it this spring. And i also didnt expect it to be a roughly 7 hr install so between putting in on then taking it back off to get port matched thats alot of time just to run it for one summer.
Hey guys just another update here , I was planning to buy a set of tfs heads and cams so I waited to install the svo intake but of course life got in the way over the winter and I couldn't afford to get them so instead I have decided I am going to install the svo so I can enjoy my mustang alittle bit more over the summer. I have picked up a painted jlt 96-98 cai , 80mm lightning maf, new gaskets and a cobra 65mm dual throttle body so far I think all I need left to purchase is a new set of injectors and an egr delete kit to move forward. I plan to start two weeks from now when I get home from work and I will let all of you know how I progress, but be prepared I may be posting a lot of questions over the next two months.
Good to hear. Too bad on the TFS heads though. Looking forward to read/watch this build.
Hey guys when I talked to the mustang shop they didn't think I need to upgrade my injector size just yet but I have heard a lot of people say online say the svo kit originally came with 24lbs injectors. Any thoughts ? Should I stick with the stock 19s or move up to the 24?
The 19's should be good, but 24's would be for some good safe measure. With my GT i am still running my stock 21's (flashy pink coloured ones :?), but that's why i didn't upgrade them cause they aren't 19's.
Ok I may just stick to the 19's for the time being and then see how it's running when I get in the intake installed. Just running the intake with that 65mm cobra throttle body makes me nervous, the last thing I wanna do is run it too lean in the spring and blow it up and have the stang parked all summer.
The intake, and t.b are safe with the 19's, it's when you get into the heads, and cams is where you want to make sure you do think about upgrading your injectors.
Ya and the plan was to swap up when I do the trick flow swap, I am just wondering now if the stock fuel rails will fit the svo intake so then I don't need to swap as much when I start ripping into it on Thursday.
Not sure for about the SVO intake when it comes to the fuel rails. When i did the '01 Bullitt intake swap, i had to up grade to the '01 Bullit specific fuel rails because of the position of the cross over fuel line between the left, and right side at the back of the intake.
ok so I have the old intake and all hardware now removed (including the valley coolant hose and bracket which was a nightmare). Now I tried to test fit the new intake and there is no way it will fit with the egr tube. Now I wasn't sure if I should just cut it or disconnect it at the header. I know cutting it would be easier but then I would have no way to cap it because I would need to flare the end of the tube. Any suggestions ?
the other option I was thinking was to cut the egr tube now and finish the install and once I have everything hooked back up I could crawl underneath and take the tube right off and cap it at the header when I finish the install.
Either way you decide, it has to come off the header. I would spray it, and let it sit. The thing is it will be needed for e testing.
Here in alberta I cant see it ever being e tested, but either way its going to have to come out because it wont fit with it in. I may just cut it tomorrow and try to get the intake atleast bolted in before I head back to work.
Alright just another update I cut the egr tube today and got the intake manifold in but I made a mistake and reused the stock manifold bolts which are slightly longer than the one that were sent with the kit( brain fart). And when I went to torque them to spec I accidentally broke one off in the head :( so I will have to pick up a tap and die set and with any luck I will be able to get it out,if not I will be in a world of hurt.
